Hi guys! I'm new here and recently purchased a 71 skylark gs convertible. The rims are not rally chrome, but are a painted rim the color of the car....is this original? The car is bittersweet mist or a burnt orange in color, should the rims also be this color? Thanks guys!

Welcome! Are the wheels five spoke rallys? If so they should be chrome with black painted inserts originally. If they are the plain steel wheels then they could be painted to color match the car.

There were optional painted rally wheels with chrome trim rings available as an option. I believe they were painted gray/silver and black. I actually have a set of 4 by 14 inch dia in the original paint, no chrome from a 70 skylark custom. they are pretty rare. Ive seen only a handful in 20 years , counting the ones at the GS nats.

Yes 70 Sherwood gs, they look like those with the addition of stainless trim rings. Should they be painted the same color as the car? The spare tire is also the bittersweet mist color. Were these rims common for 71 gs convertibles? thanks guys!

Are the rims that I have popular? Is body color the correct color for this style rim? Thanks, Dan.

Mine don't look like that. they look like the typical buick chrome rallys except in paint with chrome trim rings. The ones in the photo look really different, sorta like olds rallys maybe? :Do No:

The wheels you have were optional in '71 and '72, called Super Sport Wheels.
    '71's were 14"x6" and the '72's were 14"x7" and stopped mid-year.
All should be a dark gray/pewter color with chrome trim rings. Used the same center silver tri-shield center caps as the regular chrome wheels. Not very popular when new, which makes them pretty rare now. :Brow:
Here are some pics I borrowed from Richard J. on the board.

Hi Racerx88, how do I get the correct color of gray/pewter? Is there a paint code?

Were these rims ever offered in body color in 71?...mine are bittersweet mist, like the car, and both seem to look faded and original, including the spare.

Sorry, don't know the paint code.
Your wheels were painted body color by a previous owner, and are just aged/faded a bit. None were body color from the factory.

Buick Super Sport wheels are quite rare although as they were not offered in 15x7 I think that limited their appeal. I solved that by having a set resized into 15x7s and 15x8s for my former '71 and '72 - and I did paint them body color which I personally liked better.

I agree v8Sky they do look much better body color. The dark charcoal color doesn't seem to jive with most paint colors. I wish Buick offered something a bit more sporty for the 71 skylarks. I'm still not sold on the original bittersweet mist, thinking a nice red would look much better.

I believe painting them the same color of the car is a nice touch:cool:

Where can I get the wheel color code for these rims? I want to restore to original, and I'm told that these rims are never body color. What shade of pewter/charcoal color are they? Did GM offer a paint code for their wheels?

There is no paint code for those wheels. Buick only listed it as "argent". When I painted mine, I found used a paint called "dark charcoal" that Pontiac Rally II wheels were painted. This is the darker of the two colors they painted those wheels in

So it sounds like I should just pic out a dark charcoal color and run with it?
