These are #8 pan head phiillips self tapping scews. I recall these originally had a black oxide fiinish but I would like verifcation. So far I have only found them in stainless or chrome. Anyone have a source for the black oxide finish this size/
My originals are black. I think all the "kits" out there come with the chrome/stainless. I'll check to see if I have extra's
I think I have a handfull of these from a 72... are they the same? If so, send me your address and I'll send them to you. -Jon
original black oxide screws? If used is OK I have a set of nice ones the heads look pretty good where the screwdriver would leave marks, I also have a set of the stainless repro's I did not use if you need them. Bert
I have stainless. I may take you guys up on your kind offer if I do not locate a supplier with the black oxide finish.

Odd ball screws? Although the pan head sheet metal screw may work I tink the original screw had a slightly smaller head and perhaps the crown of the head of the screw was not exactly the same as well. I am sure that the end of the screw was blunt instead of pointed... Bert
blunt end on screw? The end of the original screws do not have a point... I think the head of the pan head self tapping screw is just a fuzz different also(not positive about that). Bert Sorry about the lousy picture, I am going to have to break down and get another camera.
Phillips Head Screws Jim, I'm restoring my "X" and I only want to use the originals. Best way to finish your origianls is to glass bead the screw then put a propane torch on the screw until you start to see a little red, then drop the screw into a glass jar filled with motor oil. As the screw cools it blackens from the oil. Then rinse in laquer thinner, clean off then paint in a satan clear finish, you'll be amazed at the finish. How did the mirror turn out? Ernie
