Anyone know this car? Nice low option car. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/943971327079804/
Pretty certain that belongs to fella I spoke to on several occasions about the rearend he was wanting to swap the gear for a higher gear to drive it more...he'll of a nice fella..can't remember his name rite now.
Dumb question. Is it normal for a Stage 1 car to come with no power brakes? Th400 trans, but no A/C. From the few pics I can see, the interior looks brand new. Paint looks like new too. Looks to be, from what I can see, worth every bit 74K asking price, even though it's low optioned. Vet
In '70, manual drum brakes (w/aluminum front drums) was still standard on GS 455 (Stage 1 was merely an option) so unless someone ordered power assist for the drum or power disk brakes, the car came with manual drum & a lot did. As a side note, in '70 it was still pretty unusual to see a Skylark or even GS 350 w/disk & Buick was known for having good drum brakes. In '71, power disk became a mandatory option on the GS (now all one series) if ordered with the now optional 455 (or Stage 1). Disk also started showing up on a lot more Skylarks and 350 GS's in '71 & even more so by '72. Edit: As far as A/C, idk if we have that breakdown, but seems a vast majority of automatic Stage 1 cars had A/C & almost all had PS. Buick was a luxury brand. A lot more non-A/C 4-sp. & even a decent # of manual steering 4-sp. cars. It's suprising to me they even bothered making 'em.
My 70 GS 455 came originally with drum brakes. GSJo upgraded to disc front brakes when he restored the GS i'am driving now and also installed a posi diff. But not the cone diff, a disc clutch diff. I didn't know Buick made a disc clutch diff for a 8.25 differential. That's news to me. Vet
Not a dumb question and the answer typically stumps people because they expect a Buick to come with power brakes/steering. Something you'd expect from a luxury brand that was #2 in the General Motors pecking pecking order behind Cadillac.
Just what I was thinking too. I grew-up on Buicks and my Dad was a Buick lover and his Buicks always had all the options. Most were Land yachts. My favorite was his 64 Wildcat, fire engine red with white top and burgundy interior. That nail head would broil the tires off. LoL My Navy buddy who lives in Hawaii has a 70 Corvette, modified with 650 Hp. He is just finishing it up with a lots of test driving and he complained to me that not having power brakes was really getting to him (leg cramps). Living on a steep Volcano Island with no power brakes blows my mind. The hell with gaining a few more horses, give me power brakes!!! At least he has power streeting and a 5-speed. VET
When I restored my 70 Stage1 4-speed one of the first things on the list was ditching the finned drum manual brakes and adding power disc’s. After two hard run ups and then hard braking she didn’t want to stop! Took all the force I could muster and downshifting to slow her down … I can see why Buick made power discs standard on the GSX
I run manual discs on everything, but personally,I have never felt the difference between power and manual brakes.
?? Brian, do you mean that you don't feel a difference is stopping power with manual vs power brakes.. cause certainly you can tell the difference between power brakes and manual brakes when it comes to pedal effort.. While my race cars always had manual disc brakes, and they worked well with reasonable pedal effort with the correctly sized master, no one would mistake them for something with vacuum or hyd assisted brakes.
