70 Stage 1 bites the dust.

    Rear end that is.

We have been playing with our Titian Red 70 Stage 1 "survivor" more and more recently, 197,000 miles with original matching engine (rebuilt in 1987 but has only amassed 57 miles since), BB trans, and original 3.64 10 bolt rear. We just finished a COMPLETE suspension rebuild, front and rear with all graphite stuff from PST, new shocks, installed correct seatbelts (originals were missing), am/fm radio from WildBill Burton, and a bunch of other stuff.

Decided to change all filters and fluids today. Engine and trans went fine. Pulled the inspection cover from the rear and everything was fine until we cleaned out all the goo in the rear and we heard metal clinking into our catch pan. Grabbed a tire and turned it to locate the problem. The center pin holding the small spider gears and clutches in the chunk had "wallered" out its hole in the case and the case and pin were coming apart. It would have broke in Reynolds in November had we not found it today.

Thankfully I kept the original rear out of my Diplomat Blue 70 Stage 1 (also 3.64) so we will just swap them out tonight. It has already been treated to a bearing and reseal some years back. This car has been raced hard for years (a testament to its original drivetrain still in the car 197,000 miles later) so I cant complain I guess. Thinking about taking this car to the Year One race in Commerce next month. If all goes well tonight, we prolly will.

Please keep your eyes out for a chunk case to put my stuff in to bring this rear end back from the dead. Thanks.

    See ya.

But the car is still in one piece?

Hardly bit the dust! I knocked over a tree with my '70 Custom. That didn't kill it

    You scared me!

Yep, the car is still in one piece, but the rear end is pretty much toast for now. This car is original with 197,000 miles of abuse, a hard life of racing, but is fairly solid and in need of restoration. It looks decent and is a solid driver and is a lot of fun. Once we swap in the other rear, I would drive it anywhere.

Jim, that thread title is just too cruel! Glad to hear it's not really dead. Wife is talking about going to GA for Thanksgiving, but need to see if I can get that moved up...

Jim, when's Year 1 at Commerce?

Glad to hear you are getting the Stage 1 squared away. I'm going to Memphis for the finals of the PRO series the weekend of the 8th. Doubt that I will come to Reynolds this year unless I decide to bring the Regal. Always enjoyed Reynolds but won't have time off from work this year. Hope to catch you soon.
