70larkownr Where did that civic go?

Hey guys here is my 70 skylark that I got in early part of june as an ugly yellow primered dented bondo banana boat. Now it looks quite a bit better as you can see. Im gonna turn it into a GSX clone with black marbalized stripes. I think the blacked out wheels really add to the look, what do you guys think? It has the high comp 350/th350 and 2.56 rear gear. I'm only 17 and did all this work at home in my own garage with my own money, this aint no mommy and daddy bought it for me deal. At the link is the album with the buick in it and also my malibu wagon I had before the buick but I have always wanted the buick so I sold the wagon.

huh, got a '70 hood though

well after further review , i see that the hood and bezels are '70 . but i sure like the look of the '70 bumpers better . good project there , just need to find '70 bumpers and grille , with some luck ya'll find them and you are goin to have a cool ride . it sure reminds me of a old '70 driver i had , 15 years ago , blue interior, i had green buckets from a lemans. and mine was in dark gray primer . but i had rallyes . oh that damn past ,what i'd do to be young again and why dont i have that car today . good luck my boy-steve

Well guys I'm only 17 but that doesnt mean I'm stupid, I can read a title. I know about the bumpers, run what you have and there aint a whole lot of parts around kansas. At least one or two of you gave me a little credit and saw that the bezels and hood were a 70, not mad but just get put down alot because of my age. Going to school and having a full time job at the same time doest pay well enough to buy a brand new (you fill in the blank) so I'm kinda stuck with what I've got.
    Thanks for looking

    Hey Mack,

It looks like you've got yourself a good little project car.

So what are your plans for it?

Hey guys, not really sure about what I'm going to do with the car. I have alot of ideas but could use some input about what you guys think I should do. The 350 isnt going to stay, its just not easy enough to make fast, alot of money in other words. I've thought about putting an ls1/t56 in or maybe a 6 liter instead of the ls1. That would lighten up the car a bit and I could run 4.11 rear easy enough without getting bad mileage, aint that .5 overdrive wicked? Ive also thought about the 3.8L turbo swap with a 200 4r but it seems like you have to spend alot to get the 200 to stand up and the 3.8L are hard to run across. Then there is the 455 of course, 14's stock would be great. I have many great ideas, just dont know where to do with the car yet. After looking on this board though I have learned that it is very bad to stick a chevy engine in there which kinda makes me hestitate about the ls1, I know its GM corporate engine or whatever you wanna call it but this program is mostly chevy funded so you fill in the blank and I dont see any of these engines in buicks now. I like the way old cars look and how they are built SOLID. I was looking at 4th gen camaros but you have to spend 1k in chaisis stiffeners just to get to the point where things wont flex. I like the new technology though, I think I would be happy with my car with a stock ls1, I just want something that runs 13s, is dammed reliable and not too modified and still knocks down some pretty decent mileage. What do 455s get for mileage when you are driving like the pedal is an egg? I have had some other do able thoughts such as corvette irs and maybe building an adapter to slap some c5 brakes on the front. I know some one on the teamchevelle.com website did this but I think he disappeared off the board!? Maybe he didnt test them before he took his car out hahaha.

    Mack,

One idea that many on this board have done is to drop a 455 in it. You could do it for between $500 and $1500 and see a big improvement. You wouldn't make a small block chevy fit and run fast for less.

You can also fit disc brakes and a-arms/bushings and such to make it handle using parts currently available and not overly expensive.

    Good luck :TU:

The sweet deal about this is that it already has disc brakes up front! Where can I find a 455 in good shape? I would really like a 70 not the low performance 73-up but would take one if I found a really good deal on one and just swap on some bulldog heads maybe. Not bad for 17?

Ask on the parts wanted section or keep an eye on the parts for sale section or eBay. They pop up from time to time. I know a guy here in AZ that dropped a stock 72 or 73 455 in a Skylark rag top. He added a mild cam and is running low 14's on street tires. With just a few more low coast changes he could be in the 13's no sweat.

Yea thanks man, I'll do that soon enough, probably get me a 455. Are they that much worse on gas than a 350, with all that torque they could move the car easier. Are there different versions of the th400? Like different lengths?
    Thanks,

The biggest factor regarding the gas mileage is attached just below your right ankle. :Brow:

A 455 with a well tuned Qjet can yeild some decent mileage, as long as you stay out of it. There are a few things involved in the swap, but if you had a good running, relatively low mile 455, and put some great heads on it and a cam swap... big things can happen.

Rick Henderson did that with a 1970 motor and went 12.00 last weekend! I'm doing something similar with a 1976 motor (with an enormous amount of help from Rick). Hopefully I'll get to the track before the season is over.

What is considered realitively low miles? I see them for sale and they are rebuilt around 100k miles and they arent bored out because their wasnt enough wear to, is that right? How did he run that 12.00? Is he using a switch pitch too?
