Will a '70 Olds Rear work in my '72 GS?

Or is it one of those 8.2 size and I wont be able to find a posi gear for it without sacrificing my first born?

    Thanks for the help!

Are you trying to put the guts from a Olds 12bolt in a 8.5?

    Scott,
What ratio rear are you looking for, and do you care if it's a chevy 12 bolt, or do you want the correct type rear?

Yes it will fit. BUT the Skylark used a pinion yoke that was 1 inch longer, so the driveshaft will have to be shorten by an inch. Posi are still made for these cost about $450. Axels still made, dont know cost. Gears are still made 3.42, 3.90, 4.33 only, cost about $250. There is a fella in Erie PA that sells these parts (idont know if that is anywhere close to you)

    Duane,
What gear do you have in the 12bolt? Posi? What did it come off of? What part of PA are you in? I might be interested IF he is not.Dave

    Hey Duane,

Somewhere in the low 3's. I have no concern about correctness, just if I can make it a posi.

    Thanks, Duane.

I have a 1970 olds 442 12 bolt O type in my 69 GS400 Convertable and I found no differance in the drive shaft length, I also have a 1969 olds 442 rear in my 1964 skylark and once again I never had to shorten the drive shaft. I also have put chev 12 bolt's in some of my cars as well and again drive shaft the same. Maybe I am just lucky

Not just the 8.5 pinion yoke that is longer but the 8.5 pinion & the housing it resides in :)

The type "O"s (12 bolt smooth cover, 10 bolt guts) are mighty expensive to rebuild... best rebuilt & used under high dollar 442 resto's.
