I am not any kind of expert on prices but I think the car has potential and would be worth more than $30k to the right person. The quarters should have been cut and fitted at the door opening and this is a problem with a lot of replacement quarters. It is not a big fix when replacing them. This car would cost as much as starting from scratch to do. If you replaced the inner fender for a 70 I believe the rest of the sheetmetal would pass. We know Dave’s car was Not numbers matching and had later model fenders but it was done to the 9’s. I think the engine was date correct, not sure about the trans but Dave would have to answer this. We know it brought around $135K twice. A number matching one brought what $180k??? It depends on how much work that you can do yourself as to if you are upside down or about market value. Ones even not numbers matching that have had body off restorations seem much stronger price wise than body on restorations numbers matching. I think a lot comes down to detail, how correct it looks and the quality of the paint job. I would not buy it because it is a 4 spd and No AC but different strokes for different folks… The GSX stage-1 4 spd AC car is probably the pentacle. Hopefully this car will go to a good home when the price gets adjusted… .
Agreed amigo. The "looker" on this car reports the problem could well be worn hinge pins/bushings and or alignment. That would be a large difference maker to me. This X is optioned just like the one I owned. Even if you had a matching numbers engine, you could be one missed shift away from changing that. Personally, I don't know why it is so important to so many. Can't be many original owner "X" cars left. Would love to see an old family photo album shot of this beast!
I can't imagine any bodyman going through the trouble of putting 1/4s on and leaving the door gaps like that. I wonder if the door isn't shut all the way..
Looking at that nasty filler panel job in front of trunk lid this might have involved a shade tree, pizza, beer, buddies, and a welder lol
Door was shut completely. You can see the drop in the stripes from quarter to door so it appears to be combo of alignment and sagging hinge pins. Passenger side almost the exact same.
Step off your high horse Fritz. Seems you would rather see this car in the scrapyard. You're being an awful critic from half a dozen pictures.
I am not high and I do not own a horse! Misunderstanding me, I want it saved but cannot imagine that happening with the current pricing is what I am saying. Just price it fairly so someone can afford to do it right and enjoy it P.S. Not just the pictures, there is critical information shared on all the other details I won’t bother to repeat if you read through the whole thread. Price is way off base BUT would like someone to get it when the owner comes down to earth on his pricing.
Now yer talkin! Lol I’d rattle can the engine compartment, jack up the door edges to rearch them and drive that muther!
When the door pins are fixed and the door drop is raised in the correct position the gap will be even worse. It is a common problem with replacement quarter panels. Some just add bondo fiberglass mix to fix it. In case some do not know this is the way to fix it. This is what needs to be done to this GSX. Also need to weld the seam in the quarter and the tulip panel. .
I'm not a professional body man so not saying you're wrong Nelson, but I've cut these cars apart & put them back together & have never had to do that. Once the hinges are done, adjust the doors (back) to get the correct gap and then adjust the front end sheetmetal accordingly. I weigh the doors down with an equal amount of ballast as the glass/guts so once painted the gap doesn't change. I'd be curious how the factory handled that since the doors were on & no guts/glass when they were painted. They probably "knew" how far out of alignment to make them & hoped for the best. Actually, as much of a PIA as NOS fenders are, once they're apart all the gaps can be optimized. It doesn't get much better than this (new quarters & NOS Fenders).
You could most likely still buy quarters from GM in 89. Shortly after that, I believe they were discontinued.
Maybe the body wasn't properly braced Or supported when the quarters were installed. Big problem with rag tops. Maybe a bent frame too ?
The whole story of this car used to be on this site. With more pictures. It may have been lost during the server crash.
I still have a left factory quarter I bought in 1987. Think I paid $175 for it along with a right inner fender for $29. I may still have the invoice
