I need some troubleshotting help!!! I replaced the gauge bezel in my 70 GS which of course meant that all the gauges had to be removed and installed in the new bezel. Now my gauges don't work properly. For example when I turn on my headlamps, all my gauge automaticly move to the left. In otherwords my oil pressure gauge goes to zero, my temp gauge goes to maximum temperature, the gas gauge goes to empty etc:. Also when I turn on my blinkers all the gauges move in time with them. Has anyone experienced this?......Mike

    Check your ground wires.

PS - One thread is good enough to get someone's attention :bglasses:

My Guess would be that you misinstalled some of the wiring,or like Marco said, you forgot some ground connections. This wouldn't be a conversion to gauges from idiot lights, would it? The wiring is different for gauges.

Actually it wasn't a conversion from idiot lights to gauges. All I did was remove the existing gauges from the old dash bezel and reinstall them into the new dash bezel. Is there a chance that I could have plugged the main wiring harness into the back of the bezel upside down or is it possible to do that. Also I had a very hard time slipping the spade connector for the main ground back on where it is grounded at the headlight switch. Thanks guys for your input by the way...........Mike

    Mike,
It's possible you missed a pin when reconnecting the harness to the back of the cluster. As far as the grounds go, try making your own with a wire and 2 ring terminals. Additional grounds won't hurt.

Likely a ground issue but something else to check while it's out of the car.
Last year I bought a "reconditioned" guage package for my '71 Skylark. Vendor had taken it apart to clean & inspect. Trouble started when he reassembled it. The resistor for one of the guages, bottom left....water? , can be installed in one of two positions.
50/50 chance & he had it wrong. Smoked it as soon as I plugged it into the dash harness.Great guy, he refunded all my costs including shipping.
Compare the resistor positions with the guage package you removed & make sure they agree. Also look at the pins on the printed circuit, where the harness attaches. They become a bit brittle & can easily break when removing/installing the harness connector.

Make sure none of the pins broke off (possibly lodging in the plug). They come off easy after 30+ years.

Rick had the same problem on his 70. He added a ground to the fender at the battery and solved it. I added a ground terminal to my gauge from an old one to fix my 71. Here's some info off of George's site.
