Once again, another question I have. Since I am new to this motor, I have never done an oil change on one and I want to know how many quarts of oil I need to do an oil change? I will be getting a new filter as well, and I am not getting fram. Won't be able to find an AC delco one brand new. What should I look for?

    Thanks

5 quarts total + 1 quart to keep in the trunk. Wix is a good oil filter. if you cant find either of them, just use a fram, never had problems with those. What oil are you using?

Was planning on using pennzoil 10W-30 weight NON-synthetic oil. Thanks for the info. on how many quarts I needed! I heard about wix before, and I just might use one. The only thing I hate about fram is the fact that they contain cardboard internals....a buddy of mine cut one open to prove it to me. :eek2: Before I knew that I had used fram on my car all the time and had no problems with them but I kinda got fearful of them once I learned about their insides.

    Again thanks!

dont use pennzoil! that **** will gum up your motor! we've had a 81 fiat and a 77 mercury xr7 that ran pennzoil their hole life and the motor on the xr7 needed new mains and rods, had an inch thick of sludge and the fiat was sludged and starting to smoke. Its really bad oil, pennzoil is the same as quaker state by the way. dont use them! Use castrol or valvoline. I switched to valvoline and its some good oil! I had a leaky valve seal and i used valvoline vr1 and after a week of driving it, the smoke stopped completely. And 5 months later its still sticky when u rub it between your fingers. Try valvoline VR1. Damn good oil.

    Thanks man,

I heard about castrol being good oil, but hadn't gotten many thoughts on valvoline although I have heard no one complain about it. I will either use castrol or valvoline then come to think of it.

*NAPA* filters are the same as wix... so if you cant find specifically Wix filters... go with a napa gold filter part number 1258

i use castrol gtx 10w40, 4 1/2 litres. of that volume of oil, i also fill the oil filter before installation. i purchased 8 wix oil filters (#51258) from rockauto instead of searching for a local vendor.

I used valvoline 10W-30 oil and a STP oil filter. Hope it works out alright, it seems to be running fine but sometimes on startup it will smoke just a bit, only sometimes, but never used to the first few times I fired it up to drive it. hmmmmmm. It also leaks a few drops of oil when i put it into park and turn the engine off........... :Do No: Will check it out furthermore on the weekend I can make it through the rest of the week with it!

    Cody,
NAPA OIL is also Valvoline. but they have it packaged for Napa. Can't go wrong with Valvoline. I have a 95 Grand Cherokee that should be turning 200,000 in the next week or so and I just removed the silicone valve cover gasket last week and it was super clean in it. I suggest if you don't know the motor too well,to put in oil and a good filter Napa,Wix etc then after 500 miles change it again in case there is any gunk that might work itself loose.

Smokes lightly on start up? Could be a dried up valve seal, Give it a month or 2 and let the valvoline do its job, i havnt had any issues with my car smoking since i switched oil. I wont have any smoke issues once i get this new motor done and dropped in  .. well maybe some smoke but thats only bcuz i'll be roasting the rear tires. :3gears:

I'd reccomend 10w 30 Castrol Synthetic myself. ;) If you can get ahold of some, add some MotorKote to protect the motor. Doesnt need much at all, but I cant remember exactally how much.

if your engine wasn't already running synthetic oil, i would suggest that you DO NOT start running uit now... unless you want to have all kinds of NEW leaks pop up :eek2:

Dont bother with any engine additives. most are a joke. Just let that valvoline run thought the system and do its job. I hadnt started my car in 2 weeks and today i go out, pump it 4 times and in 2 cranks it fired up. No smoke or anything. Stuff like this is going to happen on any 30+ year old car. You can also take a compression test and maybe see if its bad piston rings. that would be a good start. But just let the valvoline work for 4-5 months. Did you use VR1?
