I am in the process of getting all of my 4-Speed parts together to do an auto to manual swap on my 72. I started a thread in the parts wanted section to try and locate a 4-Speed hump. I don't know if everything is the same between the earlier year skylarks when it comes to the hump, but I was hoping you guys can lead me in the right direction on picking up a factory or repro 4-Speed hump. Anyone know where to get one??? I have heard that with a little cutting the 64-67 Chevelle 4-Speed hump will work if modified to the correct shifter boot ring for the console cars, but still not totally sure. Any help on getting this piece would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

    Andrew,
I parted my 68 GS400 and took the hump out of it and used it in my 72 for years. When that car succumbed to rust,I removed it and it is now welded into my 71 GS with an M-20.Had factory carpet and it fit like a glove.
P.S. dont be suckered into a Chevelle one...aren't even close.

The hump in my 71 automatic is the same as my 70 4 speed. Except the 4 speed has a hole in it that looks like a 4 year old did the work.
From what I found, they never were too careful when cutting the hole since the boot covers it up anyway.

    Heres the thread I started.

    hope this helps.

So do I even need a hump to do the conversion? Or do I just cut the right dimension of a hole in the existing auto hump?

Andrew - you definitely do need a hump. The following pics will help to see what I mean.

This is the hole I cut.

This is the Chevelle hump I used. Not correct but the fit is nice and a Chevelle boot + ring is available from GM.

I dont have a problem using the repro chevelle hump, but I dont want to use a chevelle boot and ring, I have to use the buick boot and ring. So having that said where do I go from here???

Andrew, I suggest using the Chevelle hump and trimming the hole to the correct shape for the Buick boot & ring. Not perfect but it will be very close.

Drop me a PM if you wish.

    Reg,
Did you weld, rivet, or screw that hump to the tunnel?

It would have had to of been welded. And I found a guy by the name of Chuck West here on our site and he led me to his website, he has the correct repro hump for the 68-72 Skylark, and its $66 plus shipping, this is the link to his site. www.allstarmusclecar.com Thanks Chuck. :beer :3gears:

First off to TS-GS, excellent question on how to fasten. The fit contour shape is truly near perfect. 3 cars I did just are siliconed in place, it provides a super seal and is easy to undo this change someday if required. For two other cars I put in two small sheet metal screws + silicone seal. Mounting is clean and super solid an all cars.

As for Andrew, beware this site as you posted may just have the generic humps(part #'s are similar to mine for Cross Country) and you might get a Chevelle hump. Keep us posted - whatever you find out.

The other part of this for the record is the hump I used was for an earlier Chevelle car (listed as a 64-67 with console) I tried 4 different Chevelle humps before I picked the one I did. See the link below for more:

If you get Reg's hump I think you have to use the carpet molded for an automatic. If you order a carpet for a 4 speed you'll have extra material.

I used the 4 speed hump from CARS in NJ and the molded carpet from ACC for a 4 speed, there is no excessive lump in the carpet. No one who's every looked at the car can even tell how "squared" the hump is. The CARS piece is flat on the top and comes down to meet the drivers side floor pan at a 90 deg. angle.

Hi Paul, good to hear from you here. I'm a bit curious on the hump you used, does it look like this? (listed as 68-72 4-speed without console)

    Reg,
That's a good idea to not weld it. I know they were originally, but seems like overkill for its purpose. And I like the idea of making it easy to reverse as mine is a matching numbers car. Am going to keep every part removed so it can go back to original if so desired. Thanks for the tips.

Reg, That last hump you posted is what I always envisioned it looking like till we started this conversation a while back.

The Chevele hump Reg spoke of using earlier is perfect for the countour of the tunnel and fits and works great.

Paul how you been. Great comment on the carpet. I wouldnt have gave that much thought.

    Another good thread guys.

Well Chuck West on here says he has the correct 68-72 Hump for the Skylarks. I posted his website address up a few posts, but if it is what he says it is then there would be no need to go with the Chevelle hump.

  20. Reg- The right angle is the same but the top is not really that square. It's more flat (level with the the front of the trans hump at the top) and the lower side towards the seats is a wider base. I don't think it makes a difference, since it's under the carpet. But it provides a good solid, level base for a consolette.

    Greg- What's up man!!
