Can someone tell me what the difference is in the two 350-4 engines produced in 1970. I see there is a difference in hp and torque. Where is the difference? Cam, heads, etc?

    Chris Lott 4 speed finally

I believe one was 8:1 compression, and the other was 10.20:1. The difference was made with pistons.:TU:

    Chris,

I think hes refering to the difference between the two four barrel engines. The two barrel 350 was the low compression engine. In 1970, there were three different horse 350s. The 350 2V, the 350 4V, and the 350 4V GS. The ordinary four barrel engine was a 285 horse, the GS application was 315 horse. I believe Buick only did that one year.

That is what I am refering to. Where is the extra HP. Compression ratio and torque are also different in these two blocks.

another difference is the 285hp engine has steel rockers.. the 315hp has aluminum .. blocks are the same. the 285hp heads are the same as the '69 gs heads in 70 they upgraded the gs with higher comp. heads and lighter weight rockers.

    darrenkp Love that Torque!

In '70 the 230hp, 2V and the 285hp, 4V. had 9.0:1 cr. These are codes SO and SB respectively. The code SP is the 315hp engine, and it had the 10.25:1 cr.

Cylinders heads are the same for all years. Compression changes were done with different pistons.

I beleive the engines he is refering to are the 2 4bl 350 buick made in 70 there were 3 different 350s made in 70. 1 2bl and 2 4bl the engine codes of the 2 4bls are SB and SP the difference in the before mentioned SO(the 2bl 350) and the SB( the 285hp 4 bl) was made in the pistone bore size... however the difference between the SB and the SP( the 315hp 4 bl) was all done in the heads like i mentioned above... they both have a bore and stroke of 3.80 x 3.85

Thanks guys. Any advice on what pistons to use to take it back to the 10. range. I will need to bore it and rebuild. Car will be a street car. I plan on putting a TA intake on it. I have a fresh set of later model heads that would need to be pluged or sold and the 70 heads re done. Car is all original as it sits now.

    Ram Air

Wouldn't the Ram Air application in the GS help the 315bhp rating of its 350-4 over the Skylark's 285bhp 350-4? Definitely not 30bhp, but the Ram Air intake has to be worth something.
