I know for a fact that I have a 7 blade flex fan I took it off a 70 GS but you want the clutch style right ? I am going to check the clutches on them to see if they are good .

I definitely need the clutch type. I have a good clutch, but will take yours with the clutch if you want to sell it that way.:bglasses:

    Hey Guys,

Got a question for you. I recently found a 7 blade fan and clutch in a bone yard and have been a little worried about trusting the clutch. Whats the best way to test them?

Make sure there is no leak around the hub bearing. Also, it should not be loose....the best way to check that is with it mounted. Also, when you rotate the hub, you should feel some resistance. If it turns easy or the bearing is loose, it's junk.

If it doesn't work you will notice overheating at idle speeds on hot days.

One further note, it's best to store them in a vertical position......the fluid can leak out if you lay it flat. Happenned to me once. :bglasses:

The '70 buick chassis manual shows a 4 blade fan w/out a clutch for the GS 455 w/out AC. anyone have a pict. of this setup as mine is like the AC (7 blade w/clutch) and I wonder if this is my alignment prob.?

Your fan shouldn't be a factor with pulley alignment. Do you have the wrong water pump? Is the pulley too far out or too close to the motor?

I use the WP for non AC. It looks to be about an .125" in to motor

You have the wrong water pump. There is a short shaft, and a long shaft. Match your new water pump up to the one you took off the engine.

With the fan mounted on the engine, give the fan a good twist. If it rotates more than once, the clutch is gone or on it's way out.

Thanks for tips on the clutch! This one is definately "stiff" when you turn it, so I think I'll try it.

One other thing about the 4 blade, non A/C set up; there should be a spacer between the pump and the blade that the clutch equiped cars didn't use.

Another thing on that pic I believe that the chassis manual shows a generic 4 blade fan but I do not believe that the GS came with it . If you check all the other chassis manuals from GM and especially Buick 70-72 even 6cyl have the same blades (4) . I definatly have an extra and will get back later with a price for you , thanks
