I beleive it came with chrome air cleaner, stiffer handeling package,gs badges, posi rear, front disc brakes, and um maybe redline tires. From what I know.
The GS option on a Riviera was nothing more than a handling package. It included front and rear "heavy duty" suspension, a 3.42 limited slip diff, Special ornamentation (fender tags), dealer installed chrome air cleaner lid (some got the lid, some did'nt!) and a wide mouth heavy duty air cleaner. The heavy duty suspension I believe was special rate springs and shock absorbers. I have to consult my parts book to see if there was actually a different part number shock for the GS optioned Rivs. And even though the brochure says it came with a dash emblem, they never did!
Riv GS's came drum too. The discs were just another option available on GS or non GS Rivs. My 68 has drums, the 69 has discs. Both in my opinion stop jsut as well as one another.
Hi, Thanks for the replys This one looks to have the chrome air cleaner, disk front brakes, posi rear end, gs badges on the fenders (at least holes for them). That's all I noticed so far. Pick it up tomorrow, (rust bucket, basket case or arrives in boxes). Was there anything special done to the motor, eg recurved dist, carb pump bigger, larger valves ?? Thanks Bruce
No engine options or upgrades available on 69 Rivs. The 430 is a great engine. Does the car have buckets and console? I love the airplane shifter.
Everything else was the same as a regular Riv. One tell tale clue is the placement of the GS badges on the fenders. The bottom of the GS emblem should be even with the bottom of the Riviera lettering. If its not like the pic, there's a good chance someone added the emblems
The 68 had the horse shoe style shifter, the 69 had the "boat throttle" shifter. Well, thats what I cal it anyway
Jason is correct in his listing of the components of the GS package. And disc brakes, as well as tires, were separate options. I happen to have the handling option without the GS (the original owner preferred the highway gear ratio). My window sticker says the following: F40 H2 Ride and handling option special front & rear springs and shocks, and high rate bushing & track bar Apparently this was a significant improvement when coupled with the new suspension geometry for 1969 with its lower center of gravity. At least thats what my books say. Steve
I was hoping this engine was special, shows 83,000 on the clock, the other 69Riv I'm parting shows 47,000. The GS car has a bench seat the other Riv I'm parting has black console, and buckets, (driver side is a power bucket seat) and floor shift tilt column. 69 GS additional GS options, how about heavy duty 7 blade clutch fan. The GS emblems are buried in boxes inside the car, there are correct holes in the fenders for them. The other 69 Riv has a 5 blade clutch fan. Both AC cars Bruce
GS Riv also came with a faster ratio steering box in '69. Mine has a 2.5 turn lock to lock Saginaw box in it. A '70 GS I parted last year had the same thing-2.5 turn L to L.
Ted, I have quite a bit of documentation on the Riv GS's including the 69 Riviera wholesale car order form. I dont see any indication that the GS came with a faster ratio box over the base model Riv
I have 3 Riv's here I'm parting. All were restoration projects someone started. Then found out they couldn't due to experience, cost or unavaiable body panels. Both 69's are too rusty to repair, The 70 the drive train is missing and someone has done a whole bunch of patch work to it at one time. http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=154112&highlight=70+riviera http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=147894&highlight=70+riviera The 69 I brought home today is in pieces, floor pans, trunk pan shot, inner fenders shot, patches welded in all over, bumpers missing, but it has a new vinal roof LOL. Does the trim tag indicate a GS optioned car? ST 69 49487 EUC 144 231 BDY TR 674 75 F PNT 0ID I found one GS emblem from one of the fenders . I'll check the three that are here and see what they are lock to lock Thanks Bruce
I would think that the majority of '69 Rivs came with a 3- 3.5 turn box. The faster box probably was available on a non GS Riv , though and standard on the GS. I have a '66 Riv that I am parting and it has a slow 4 turn box! A standard '67 I just parted had a 3 turn box in it. My '66 Riv GS has a 3 turn box in it,though a faster one was available. Even my '84 Riv. convertible has a 3 turn box,but a T-type turbo Riv('84) I just parted had a 2.5 turn box. That is going into the convertible, along with the aluminum wheels and bumper braces. I have another '69 Riv that I just got and will have to check the s. box in it.
The new variable-ratio steering box was standard on all 1969 Rivieras including GS models. Previously in 67-68 models, there was a base 3.75 turn steering box plus an optional 3.25 box, but this was not included as part of the GS package.
