I am in the process of aquiring a 69 Riviera from my boss,minus engine and tranny.My question is,the sticker in the engine compartment says the original engine was a 455,but all the websites I have been to for engine pricing and information claim the 430 was the only engine in 69.What is the deal?
could have been a late 69 production car. check the assembly date, my 64 Riv has a 65 401 (matches ID tag) It was built in Sept. 64.
That is what is really confusing me,the production date is April of 69.I will check it again when I go to work,and post when I get home.
One of my `69 Riv's is s/n 49935 out of 50,XXX. It had the 430 but had the `70 455 rockers, lifters and pushrods, and aluminum rod plugging the oil feed holes in the heads. It could have been changed at some time but tough to tell. In your case the engine could have been changed and they went to the extent of changing the emissions decal. On the bottom of the decal it states the year of production also. Or being that the engine is missing maybe the plate that retains the radiator and the sticker is on is from a different application. Ok,this blows me away.I may be off here,but the body tag code states it is a 69,but it was built in Sept.Would that not be a 70 then, or did they go much later in the year before they switched to the next year?
DOH! Yeah,that is definitely a giveaway on the 69.Next time I will use common sense. Thanks for the info. Time to head on over to the paper trail and get some help to finish decoding my VIN and Body Tag.
