maybe my searching skills aren't that good but i tried to find a post laying out the steps for taking out old rear springs and putting in new ones - does anyone have a link or could they lay it out? - thanks!

    Very simple,
Support frame just ahead of the rear wheels with jack stands so the axle hangs off the ground
Using your floor jack, put it under the center of the axle, raise axle a couple inches, but not enough to raise the body
    Remove lower shock bolt
Lower jack, if the axle doesn't drop far enough for the springs to fall out, put jack under one side of the axle, give jack a few pumps to articulate axle, opposite side spring should fall out. Repeat for other side.
If you have an anti-sway bar, disconnect it, so it allows the axle to articulate easier.

Simple job, just jack up the rear and place on JACK STANDS in front of the rear wheels on the frame, remove one tire and place jack under axle, unbolt the shock ,lower the jack, that will let the axle drop enough to remove the spring, place the new spring in place, jack that wheel up replace shock bolt and replace the tire, repeat the other side. Good luck

    perfect guys

    many thanks!

final question: i am looking for "cargo coils" which i understand are a bit taller than oem height - i think the oem one is MOOG 5385 - would anyone know the correct part number for the "cargo spring" version?

    thanks!

The cargo coils will do you well, Whatever the Moog part number is for the A body is, is what it is, so to speak, I don't believe there an "OEM" number for them as they weren't "Original Equipment Manufacture" for A bodies from GM.
Some people use the A body station wagon rear springs, THOSE would have an "OEM" part number.
