Can you guys help me decipher the codes on the data tag for this 69 GS400? I've got the basics...just need help with the rest. (Also, I have looked at Buick paint charts (autocolor.com) and cannot find the paint code (0-0) anywhere on these charts.) GS400 data tag codes That would make sense, BUT... the letters/numbers on this plate seem to be very clear. These digits are very clearly not "D". See for yourself...
I cannot find a listing for "O" paint anywhere o No: I wonder if it was an SCO paint job. Can you post a picture of the car color?
There was only one 1969 GS400 Coupe with SCO paint at the Leeds, MO plant. This could be the car. No way to tell from the DCR's what color that was though :ball: :beer
I've only seen this car once...last weekend. I'm hoping to buy it some time this week. It has definitely been repainted at some time in its life. The current color looks like "Twilight Blue" on the Autocolor.com paint chart. But I have not been able to look close enough to see what color is under the current paint. In the Oldsmobile world, the Special Order paint colors would be shown on the data tag with a dash (--) if no vinyl or vert top...or (-A) if white top, etc. The actual color could not be determined from this data plate, but would appear, for instance, on a broadcast sheet. My 70 Cutlass SX is a special order "Sebring Yellow" with white vinyly top. The data tag shows (-A). I found the broadcast sheet inside the bucket seat back and it shows a paint code "51" which is the code for Sebring Yellow. So I guess it makes sense that 0-0 may represent a Special Order Color. Do you know what the Special Order colors were for 1969 Buick? Thanks for all your help so far... Kevin
Ok I think I have it. O -O is the 1971 sales code for Fischer code 53 ( Cortez Gold ) So I suspect someone got a 71 color on the top and the body. I do not see the Sales code O used from 64-72 except in 71 for Cortez Gold. Perhaps they reserved the letters tied to a color for years they did not officially offer the color. Just a thought. It would be interesting to see if any evidence of gold paint still exists.
OK. That's a possibility. If there's one thing I've learned about these cars from this era, it's that almost anything was possible and there's almost always an exception to the "rules". So is there a known set of special order colors for 69? Also, I guess it would be interesting to see the data tag from a Cortez Gold 71 GS. Sounds like that would also be 0-0? And are you guys convinced that this is the Alpha "O-O" and not the numeric "0-0" (zero-zero)?? Because the first digit sure looks like the zero above it and the zero below it.
In 1971 Cortez Gold was letter "Q". In 1970 Saturn Yellow was letter "Q" In 1969 Fire Glow Orange was letter "Q" So GM did not reserve letter codes for different colors over the years. I cannot find any listing from 1968 thru 1972 for a Buick "O" paint code. SCO colors could be colors offered on the Riv or colors from any of the other GM divisions and there are rumors that GM even painted some of their cars SCO Mopar colors in 1970,71 or 72, so back in the day, money talks and you could get what you wanted. You really need to find an original paint spot on that car to determine the color better. A good place is under the windshield interior trim cover. :beer
This might be splitting hairs here, but that paint code really looks more like 0-0 (zero-zero) as opposed to O-O. o No: Other than that, the only thing this non expert can suggest would be along the lines of what Chrysler Corp allowed at one time. They would allow the car to leave the factory in primer only, to be painted by the selling dealer in the customers color choice. Apparently several cars per year were shipped like that during the late 50's and early 60's. I cannot remember what Chrylser did for the trim tag paint code however.
O-O Paint Code Oldsmobile and Pontiac in 1966 and 1967 used this color which was called Coronado Gold (Oldsmobile) or Tiger Gold (Pontiac). GTOs that were Tiger Gold in 1967 had O-O paint codes. Maybe this 69 GS is painted this color. Ken
