curious to see or hear how people have overcome the updating phase of the stereo system, i have bought the old eight track to convert to an updated head unit, but cannot decide how to run the updated speakers, would like to have a set of componets [mids and tweets] but cannot bring myself to cutting on my precious sheetmetal. maybe someone know of some good aftermarket kick panel pods.... or any suggestion would be appreciated.......... always interested in pics. also thanks. before i forget any ideas on the size of speaker that goes in the back seat and how its mounted?

Some people have been known to put small tweeters in the dash vents - small enough to keep the vents functional.

both opgi and yearone sell kick panels with speakers already installed. I will be fiberglassing speaker pods for mine.

I bought a speaker kit that had two 4" midbase and two 1" satelite tweets. I mounted 2-4" midbase where the dash front speaker goes and 1" satelite tweets on the windshield pillars. 6X9's in the rear package tray and an amp and bazooka tube sub in the trunk. All hidden fairly good and no cutting of metal. Crank up Bon Jovi's lost hiway cd and its road trip time....

I put a custom stereo system in a 68 Skylark Convertible.

2 x 3.5" Infiniti Kappa's were put where the factory speaker goes in the dash, They fit perfectly.

Kick panels like these (may have been these, was a long time ago) http://www.opgi.com/product.asp?top...topvalue=0&newflag=0&grpcode=34501&yearrange=

I replaced the speakers in the panels with more Inifniti's, had to do some slight clearance behind the panels to get them to fit well.

I then built a custom box that fit between the front and rear seats over the driveshaft tunnel and put 2 x 6.5" inifniti's in there. I put connectors on the box so it was removeable. (i.e. placed in trunk so it doesn't "walk away" during a car show, or if extra foot room needed)

I also built a custom panel out of wood that fit inside the trunk, it had a cutout opening for a 12 disc CD changer and then a 4ch amp was attached to the front as well. I WISH I had a picture. It was covered in black vinyl, looked sweet (the speaker box was also vinyl covered).

Headunit was a Kenwood deck with flip down face (blank outside look). I made a panel out of sheetmetal that fit where the factory plastic radio bezel was and coated it in black crinkle paint for a "factory" look.

The interior was brand new and the door panels took 8 weeks to get, I was not about to cut holes in them.

The system sounded great too. Those infiniti kappa speakers are worth their weight in gold. Though 6x9's in the rear box would've added a lot more bass.

    Hope this helps :)
