Wow, even the broken '68 "Special / Sportwagon" grills are starting to bring in more $. This one was mis-represented as a "Skylark" grill and it is not. Although it will fit a Skylark / GS it would not be correct.

I have an unbroken one in my attic that I keep for "just-in-case" my GS grill gets broke (it would be better than nothing). I wonder what that grill is worth

GEEZ, time to take mine off my 68 and put my real grille on instead!! :error: I can't believe that thing got $500, that's insane. I wonder if the surround is INCLUDED, since the listing only mentions the grille. :puzzled:

Hi Mike , what makes you said it's not correct for a Skylark ? GS's are blacked-out but Skylark are grey/silver ... maybe i miss some details , my pc screen is quite dark I have to say

    See you

Donald GS and Skylark grilles are the same except paint. Specials and Sportwagons use a different grille it isn't as deep and the mesh area is slightly taller.the Sky GS grille has athick rib that goes all the way around the mesh that the special grille does not have.i'll attach pictures.

Thatis the right grille for your car. Including the mandatory 68 optional missing piece. I may have a piece you could section in.if you're interested.

Donald, in your pic it looks like the top center "point" is broken out.

Tim/Karen, while I'm not sure when it will happen, I do intend on removing the 68 SW/Special grille from my GS and installing the proper GS grille that's sitting on my shelf. Problem is, I don't want to do it until I get my front bumper repaired and rechromed. It has damage to the top center area, the steel is kind of pushed/smashed down, and I'm afraid it would damage the GS grille. What kind of timeline are you looking at, to find a grille? I'm pretty darn sure it would not cost you $500.... :eek2:

Ok, we'll have to keep this in mind when the time comes. My grille has 2 small amateur-repaired cracks in the upper mesh area, and minor damage in the center, but overall looks very nice. Maybe I still have old pics of it, I can look later on.

    more grille talk

while all you '68 guys are huddled up here, I have a question. I am very fortunate, in that my grille is in great shape. the only problem I have is that the bar that outlines the grille is warped and sags (subtly, but noticably) between the center and each side. has anyone had any luck bringing this part back to near horizontal? any ideas?

    thanks,
    dewey

Well, i imagine they got that way from years of owners/mechanics leaning on them while working under the hood. I don't know how the metal would respond to trying to bend it straight again. I have 2 chrome surrounds, both are relatively straight, but one could use a little bending. You would think Someone has tried to straighten one of these already? Anyone???

Oops! I was referring to the plastic rim that runs around the perimeter of the grille (on the front) and perpendicular to the egg crates that is the silver color on the GS grille. I think it is probably just warped by the heat and old age, like me!

    thanks David!

    David,

I bet it has a Sportwagon grill in it :Dou: I have seen a few factory photos that have the wrong grill (or at least not the one listed as being correct) but you cannot take the factory photos as gospel because I have seen some cars that show options that were never available.

Does the car in the magazine article have body side chrome

Here is a GM photo that shows a GS with a grill painted siver in the center and a tri-shield emblem :Dou:

Here is another shot taken from the '68 commercial that I have. The grill looks to be painted all black and it also looks to have more horizontal bars( like a Sportwagon grill) than the standard GS grill, it is hard to tell though.

Dewey, thanks for clarifying. I doubt we could safely do anything to correct the sag in the plastic. I know I wouldn't want to experiment.

Mike, yes it is the SW/Special grille, with the Tri-Shield emblem instead of the GS. And they are not factory photos, they are pics of the car while the magazine had it for 2 weeks for their article, including shots going down the 1/4. I just cleaned up the camera disc, will try photos tonight. Other than the grille, everything looks "GS" to me.
