I know this has been up for discussion before, but I can't find any threads relating to it. so.....

Motor mounts for '68 rivs. If I remember correctly, there were something special about these mounts. If you went to most parts stores and ordered a set, I belive the motor would acutally sit out of square by 1" (I'm going by memory here). Was there any resolution on where we could get correct ones, or get the original ones redone.

I plan on installing my new TSP stage 2 motor this spring, and I'd like the piece of mind of some new or rebuilt motor mounts. I will be adding a torque strap for safety, but I'd still prefer to find new mounts rather than subject the 35+ year old ones to that abuse.

Any help would be apreciated. Maybe my memory is wrong on this, and if so please don't hesitate to tell me.

    Thanks,
    Brett Schmahl

Hi Brett. Boy, have I gone down this road before.

Nobody will vulcanize the old ones because they were made before the "locking tang" and the repop shops don't want the liability.

I actually located NOS replacements, but even THEY weren't right. Not too long after 1969 Buick realized there were different mounts for every year, even though the frames and engines were the same (68,69,70). So they came out with a replacement mount that was supposed to fit all 3 years.

I had grind off a part of the outer edge of the mount on the pass side mount to allow it to fit flush. The drivers sie fit as I recall.

But... I installed an aftermarket one right after I got the car and the engine DID sit a LOT higher on the driver's side. A side-by-side comparison showed that the oem mount and the replacement didn't line up the same. I am not sure if it can be modified or not.

You can try it and see what you get. Someone told me Autozone has the right mount. You can try them and see.

When mine eventually fails I'll weld up a solid mount. It'll surely vibrate, but what other choice do we have?

Thanks for the reply Yardley. Not the best news, but at least I know. I guess I'll keep using my original ones, hope they don't break, and add a torque strap for safety.

ughhh......There were about 10 recent post on this topic in regards how to reinforce your motor mount (?) and how to make a proper torque strap. I saw it here on friday at work, and was going to print it out at home on saturday (and ask a few more questions as well). Now all this data seems to be gone.

Can you guys who commented on this thread bring it back from the dead. Can you guys re-post on what you had done to modify/strengthen the mounts or add torque straps.

    Thanks,
    Brett

one guy said that he had run chains from the drivers side motor mount bolts to the front and rear of the engine and that he hadn't broken an engine mount in the 30yrs since he'd done that.
