My recently aquired 68 GS 400 has non power drum brakes. The fronts are aluminum. It stops OK but pulls sometimes on hard application. Is there any special way to adjust these, or is the old tighten to stop and back off one notch the way to go?

Check the hoses first, I had a hose go bad and similar problem, they get weak and expand before they blow completely.

Unless you are going to put disk brakes on it, replace all three just for spite. Those thing can blow at the least convenient time. If it only pulls sometimes, it's probably worn front end parts.

Drum brakes are fine. But disks are better, especially in the wet. Your choice.
