    Having just aquired a 68 convert and noticed that the front bucket seats with headrests have the seat retractor button on the back instead of trhe side like my 67 :Do No:Everything seems pretty much original on the 68 ,my question is would thier be a chance that the seats were installed at the factory late in production or should I assume that someone as switched the seats at some pint in time :mad:

    I would say they were switched. Do the seat cover designs match front to back, and what do the designs look like?

    Also, when was your car built, and did you check the ID plate to see if it originally came with buckets?

    Yes it is an original bucket seat interior car TR 178, previous owner recovered the seats with repro 68 covers minus seat buttons. VIN 444678H205555.On a side note I purchased parchment seat covers :TU: for my 67 from you way back in 92 at Carlisle.

    Thanks Mel

    I haven't seen a 68 with the release button on the back- center.... All have been on the side.
    Headrests were OPTIONAL in 68... I had a one owner original 68 with headrests (yes, on the buildsheet).

    I believe that the cars built AFTER january 1st 1968 have the headrest .... but do not take this for cash !

    Mine was built on sept 19th 1967 and do not have headrest (RPO A51 - front bucket seat) and the release button is on the side

    @ george : is your car built early in 68 ?

    Mel,
    The optional headrests for the 68 interiors (very rare option) look nothing like the 69-72 headrests.

    As far as seat frames;
    The 68 bucket seat frames (steel) stayed unchanged from the 67 design, with the button on the side, but used plastic seatbacks/lower trim pieces. Then in 69 the steel seat frames were changed to accept the center button design (69-72 design) and the headrests changed.

    Now I have seen a few cars, that were either very very early or very very late in the production year, come with other year pieces. One car was a late production 66 chevelle that had a 67 dash, another was an early 68 Camaro with a 67 dash, but these are few and far between. I also know of an early 70 GS that was built with 69 part numbered chassis components.

    If your car was not built at either the very beginning or end of the production year, then my gut feeling is someone changed them out. The head rests are date coded on one of the chrome mounting rods, so if you pull one out and check, you can tell when the seats were built. Hope this helps.

    Thanks Duane and others, for your replys. :TU: Will check date code on headrests.
