I am in the process of installing a 455 buick into my 67 gto convertible. Everything that I have been told is that the buick and pontiac frames are identical. So far they are. The buick 400 frame pads bolted right on and the motor looks to be in the right location. The only problem is that the trans. mount is about 6 inches farther back . Same short shaft 400 turbo. The 67 convertible crossmember is unique to that year and car only. The gto crossmember is straight across. I am stuck! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Your 67 GTO should have the correct '400' crossmember mounts, unless it's a Tempest frame(??)

The ST400 trans was first used on the 1967 GS.
65-66 GS used the shorter ST300 trans and had the crossmember mounts further foreward, a '400' trans wouldn't bolt up.
When I installed a ST400 trans in my '66 GS, I had to weld some brackets on the frame for the crossmember.

I just installed a 200-4R in my '64 convertible and went with a crossmember sold by Bowtie Overdrives. It's advertised as a 64-67 Chevelle crossmember but it fit's the Skylark and I'm sure it will fit a Pontiac frame too. My understanding is the Turbo 400 has the same mounting location as the 200-4R so that crossmember should work with a Turbo 400. It's not cheap but it looks nice and fit perfectly. The mount itself may have to be changed but it's easy to replace. The difficulty with the convertibles is the boxed frame doesn't allow you to slide the crossmember back like you can with a c-channel frame.

George, are the 67 crossmembers different?
I have 65-66 pieces here....they're both the same, they go straight across.
I thought the difference was the frame....it has more bolt holes further back than the 64-66 frames.

The 67 crossmember looks the same as the 65-66 from i`ve seen Walt.

That's what I thought. I saw a guy pay $125 for a nice one at Carlisle yesterday. The Buick ones are stamped steel. Some of the other GM crossmembers are tubular.

Yup and thats why i hate them!only chevelles had the tubular ones and they look a thousand times better and you have more room under there too.

Thanks for all the responses! Doesn't matter who I ask or which angle I look at it from, it should work. But it doesn't. I think I'm going to weld a couple of perches on the frame that line up with the crossmember and leave the old ones intact when I decide to put it back to original. I really want to here this 455 run! thanks again!!
