I have a 67 GS400 with a stock 67 intake manifold and a 70 Buick big block Quadrajet, it been a long time sense I took it apart and I'm having a problem with the mounting gasket. I really cant find the correct gasket, the one I have that seems close is just a thin gasket and the primary butterfly shaft is grinding on the manifold so I have to guess I have the wrong gasket. I cant recall if the original one was thick like a spacer or was a 67 Quadrajet just different than a 70? No one seems to be able to tell me so I'm hoping there is some one with a 67 that can help me.

The manifold has that channel that goes around the primary holes and leaves very little material for error. I've tried TA Performance with no luck and I really am not aware of any other vendor's that might know Buick's to help me. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Yes the carb bases are different for the 66 - 67 versus the 68 and up Qjets... you must have used a thicker gasket to space the carb up from the manifold... If it's rubbing on the passengers side, some folks grind a little off that part of the intake to allow for full movement to use the newer carbs.. or remove the fast idle screw assembly from the carb if you don't use it... you may also have to tap and screw plug the u channel exhaust channels... Russ is the only one I know of who sells the 66 - 67 gasket and steel plate, but they are very thin.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Buick-66-67...Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e4f6d23a&vxp=mtr

Maybe someone else knows of a source for a thicker version, I used to find em, but not anymore...

Thanks thats what I heard I needed but I know it wasn't there when I took the motor apart, it a good second choice. I did wind out grinding the manifold down so it will clear but there isn't much gasket there and I worried it will leak eventually. It really seems like a bad set up, do you know what that channel is for? It seems like that plate will block it off but I doubt it will make any difference. I'll try to call some of the carb. shop's around and see what they say I can't be the only one with this set up.

    Thanks

It's not a bad setup if you use the late oem 67 carb... lol.. The U channel directs hot exhaust up thru it to heat the carb base to prevent icing and speed up warm up... The metal plate is there to keep the exhaust from eating the aluminum carb base... If you only drive in warm weather, you can probably safely tap and screw in pipe end fittings to block the exhaust flow thru the U channel... The newer manifolds don't use the U channel, so they made the qjet base a bit narrower on that side in 68 and beyond because they don't have to seal the channel....

Since you've already ground the edge you might as well look for a 71-74 455 800 cfm unit for it and open up the A.P.T screw for full tuning control, Cliff Ruggels a board member here sells the correct custom jets and rods for this... a bit more flow on the primary side...

I was afraid the base was diffrent for the 67's, why not make the parts as hard to get as pssable, every thing els is that way? I love this car but I sure don't love trying to get parts for it. I live in Florida so I dont really need any help heating things up so that plate that you sent the Ebay link for might be the best way to go, what a shock more $$money I sure wish that mony tree didn't kick the bucket I could really use it.

    Thanks

If you Tap Threads in the holes on each side of the channel, about 3/4 of the way down just to make sure the plug dosen't fall thru, remember to put some grease on the tap to catch the metal flakes, and screw in those 20 cent pipe fittings, you won't need the plate.. you should be able to use any gasket and will be cheaper, unless you have to spend a few bucks to get the correct tap at the hardware store,,, Still cheaper... And will run a bit cooler there in FL... This new gas vaporizes fast enough with out the extra heat under the carb...
