Is it possible to remove the internals from a 1966 Wildcat SP 400 transmission and transplant those items into a 1967 or later Turbo 400 case to convert it to switch pitch ? Stupid Question? Any and all input welcome. Thanks

Yes. To the best of my knowledge, all you need to swap is the front pump, (with the SP solenoid), the converter, and the 2 prong electrical fitting for the kickdown/sp.
I'm pretty sure the pump mating surface is drilled for the sp orfice, but you better double-check that.
Kenne-Bell used to sell a sp conversion kit.

Wouldn't you also need to use the s/p input shaft along with the s/p front pump? I know when I just bought my s/p conversion kit from Jim Burek it came with a new (different) input shaft from that on the original non s/p transmission.

I may need to backtrack somewhat. The 66 Wildcat I found in a local salvage yard has the remains of a 401 nailhead. I am assuming that a sp 400 came standard from the factory due to the 401 engine. Am I right or wrong about this? Any of you 66 wildcat owners know for sure? Please advise.

Ken, if the engine/trans combo is original, it's a SP400. If it's sitting in the yard it might be difficult to see the shape of the oil pan; but that's the quickest way to know what you've got.

Devon, Wildcat setting in tall weeds and muddy ground. Heads are inside car which I need to identify as nailhead. On a plus side I did see air cleaner on the floor which had the 445 logo. So by that I think good chance it's a 401. One other thing, I took a quick look at the vin tag on inside driver door location and first two numbers were 4 and 6. The second number,6, does identify it as a 1966 correct?

Nope, I think you have to look at the sixth digit from the left to get the year. The first five digits refer to the model, sixth is year, seventh should be a letter designating plant code. The rest is the serial number.

I got to look at the Wildcat alot closer today. No rain to contend with. Turns out to be a 65 not a 66. Tag on it is as follows:
    O6C Flint Michigan

    ST 65-46437 Body BC 1413

    TR 421 Paint DD

    ACC C16-C60

Anyone care to identify all of this info for me please? Trans and converter still attached to engine. Could not tell if rear is posi or not due weeds, brush and muddy ground. Heads and intake removed from engine but placed inside car.
I'll call the owner tomorrow to get a price on the transmission with converter. What would you guys pay tops for the trans. and converter?

Sheet metal pretty far gone due to rust. Rear and front bumpers best items on the body. Windshield trashed but all other glass looks fine. Interior trashed.

    watch out for certain cases...

i tried recently to do this same swap with parts from a 67 caddy. my case was from 79 caddy. they are not compatible. the very late cases are missing the boss in the pump mounting flange where the orifice plug goes. this also means a pump mounting bolt hole is missing too, so you cant run any older pump in this case.

of course, my fool butt left the pump in the yard when i got these, so now i have to get a pump for this case in addition to a case for this pump :(
