My frined has a 1971 stock roadrunner with a 383 4 speed, he thinks he is going to eat me up if we race, I think I could take him what do you think?

Either one of you prolly won't win by much........but if your Riv is up to par, you stand a good chance if you can get traction. Remember, most races are lost in the first 30 feet.

I'll never forget my senior class day, (1977) this friend of mine had a '73 Road Runner with a 360 in it. Nothing special. I was a little chicken, but my other friend kept telling me "Joe, you got a big Buick......you'll blow his doors off". Well, we raced, and I beat him so badly I parked at the end of the block and shut my motor off and had to wait for him to catch up. :Brow: I would have lost my license had a cop been there, we were on a residential street. :error:

After hearing him brag about Mopars for 4 years of high school and how he ported his heads :boring: it was refreshing to set the record straight. Sad part was school was over and I couldn't even gloat. :Dou:

I think you can take him. Now if it was a 440, I would not try it. But a 383.........

As a former Mopar guy and owner of several 383s and 440s, I'd take a 383 in a short run like the eighth mile over a 440 anytime. The Roadrunner is probably lighter than you also and the four speed helps. If both cars are in equal tune and driver skills are equal I think he can take you. If you beat him and he wants to get a Buick, see if he wants to trade for my Skylark. Good luck, and if possible do this on a drag strip. Guess I still am a closet Mopar guy.

    Dave,
If your an old Mopar guy, you should know. I have rode in some 440's and they really seemed much stronger than the 383's I have been in before. Six pack cars really run well.

Now, your wanting to trade your Buick for a Roadrunner! Where's the V8Mopar board? LOL

I've heard the sound some of these 440's make. My friend has one in his Coronet. Even though I have Nailhead blood, and there are some faster things on the road than a 440 Mopar, I don't think anything else whether Ford, Chevy, or whatever has the awesome sound of power like a stroked 440 has coming out of a pair of flowmasters. Damn, them things sound nasty! :Brow:

When I posted originally for some reason I was thinking his engine was a nailhead, but if the avatar is his car then it's a 430 which maked it different, might even call it heads up. I had a 69 Roadrunner with a transplanted 440 Magnum. With a stock engine it went 13.3s with 4.30 gears and slicks. Sure do miss the old days! Course my Buick feels as good as the old RR but just doesn't put up the numbers. Oh yea if he wants to trade it would have to be a 68/69 vintage.

RACE HIM NOW!!! Both should be 15 second cars. Unless he's really good with a four speed, you should have a fender on him all the way. If not, you'll at least raise his eyebrows! :Brow: :Brow: It's a race I'd love to see...one of my favorite street races was a '68 GS400 Q-jet/auto vs Duster 340 3x2/4sp. The GS showed him the way two out of two. Just be ready when he makes some lame excuse about missing a shift. Tell him you want to run again immediately! shifting excuses :3gears: :3gears: :3gears: :blast: :blast: :blast:

In fact...I'll push you guys along a little. PM me and I'll send twenty your way. $$$ on the Buick!

I don't know anything about drag racing so if we were going too, what should I know about it, should I make my car as light as possible I.E.- taking out chains, spare tire, jack ect...

lighten it up and learn how to launch without blowing the tires. ask Yardley, he says he wins against the Mustangs by coming out of the hole hard. The other driver panics when he sees the Riv jump, and then blows his tires. The Riv wins before he can get his composure back and get the car hooked.

If he has slicks or stickies, I'd ask him why he's so eager to race a luxury car with his "muscle car."

I have seen a few 383 car's at car shows, and the owners seem to be pleased with them. I was talking to one guy that has a 1971 plymouth barracuda 383 w/ a 4spd, and he also has a 1970 Nova SS 350 A/T and he says the nova is faster on a launch than the plymouth. Rivi's can be modded for good launches, but they are better on the top end speed when stock. :TU:
