We have been working on the riv tryin to get it to run right, does a 67 430 distributor get installed the same way as a 70 455 or is it different? I have a 70 chassis book but not a 67 book. I think the distributor was installed wrong so the plug wires were in the wrong places.I set it in according to the 70 book,i just want to make sure before we fire it up again. It just didnt sound right to me when we had it running. thanks chris
It's the same procedure Chris. There is not a specific place for your #1 plug wire on the distributor cap itself, because you can turn the cap to any position you like. Just put the mark on your harmonic damper at the 0 on the pointer, and check if cylinder #1 has both valves closed (if not, just turn the crank 360 degrees) The position where your rotor is pointing at, is your #1 plug wire location. Go clock wise and the next wire will be cylinder # 8. Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 If you're switching to a HEI or after market distributor, remember that these need the full 12 Volts, so remove the resistance wire.
When installed correctly the rotor should be pointing at the passenger edge of the radiator when at #1 TDC.
Well it turns out we had the distributor in the right way,it would run but not very good.We pulled the plugs and found 2 dead cylinders 7 and 6, 6 was missing both pushrods, pulled that valve cover off he said it looked like a solid block of rust. i havent seen it yet but i'll take some pics tomorrow. later chris
I do not know how much help you might need but I live in Wood-Ridge, right down 46 from you. If you need a hand email me. Currently working on my 66 Riv.
