I finally got most of the bugs ironed out of my '66 NH in my '51 Merc and decided to take her for a spin on the highway and through a small town. On the highway, the P/S pump spits fluid out the vent hole in the cap and all over my windsheild (No hood). I can't see where this would be normal. The pump is connected to a mustang II rack. Also, when I got back home, the pump was very hot. I noticed that it was starting to knock rather loudly at times. Am I correct to assume that the fluid throught the cap is because it is pumping through the MII rack? Is there a way to slow down the flow or reduce the PSI? I'd like to adjust the pressure internally and not add an external reducer. Should I rebuild the pump myself, have it done, or just get a new one? I really like the pump on Rivracers NH from a few posts down, I'd like to know what it's off of.

Mine used to leak out the hole also until one day I read the words on the cap........"check fluid level WHEN HOT" I was just overfilling it. :Dou: When it's cold, you should be able to see the casting inside the pump, prolly about 1" from the top. When hot, the fluid should be at the "fluid level" mark on the filler neck. If it's running too hot, you can use a small tranny cooler to cool the fluid down. Also, I like to run synthetic trans fluid in mine, I find the pump is quieter when hot. If yours is making a knocking sound, check the pulley nut....those are famous for coming loose. :Smarty:

BTW.....I love it.....a '51 Merc with a Nailhead in it......that's gotta be sooooo cool! :bglasses:

Walt, that site is interesting, but, I have the round P/S pump not the teardrop shaped one. I'll still look at the one I have and see if anything is applicable. thanks.
