On both the original 8.2 open rear and te 8.2 posi that I just put in there are no tabs on the yoke to center the u-joint like on a 12 bolt. How do you know if the u-joint is centered properly in the yoke?

I have a bad vibration at around 70 mph and when I ran the car on jackstands I could see the driveshaft wobbling but the u-joint seems centered in the yoke. How do the experts (oph and monaz or others) install the drive shafts on these cars?

My '66 is the same as yours...
The bearing cups on the u-joint have a groove cut into them that accepts a c-clip. When u-joint is installed in the rear's yoke, those c-clips will be on the 'inside' of the bearing cup saddle, keeping the joint properly positioned.
Where as the tabs you mentioned would be on the 'outside' of the bearing saddle.
    Hope that makes sense!

    Thanks Walt,

Yeah, I can see the grooves but neither the old driveshaft from the st-300 or the new one from the th-400 have the clips so I guess I'll have to get some.

The chassis service manual (I always forget to check that first :Dou: ) talks about checking runout with a dial gauge so I did that and got it centered that way but now it is out on the other axis (where the u-joint goes into the driveshaft). I think I'll take it and have it balanced (only $40). Then I'll get the clips and go from there.
