Any good useable 66-67 super turbine 400 transmissions out there for a decent price? I understand that they are hard to come by. Thanks

I've done my research. Thanks for the heads up. There is an st400 on eBay listed under "65-67 grand pri 3 speed". Its hammered and he wants around $600 for it shipped. Do you know if the tailshaftsare all the same length?

I think most if not all are long. Hold off for that price. I think 100-300$ is a better range. Larry told me If it doesn't come with a converter, get another one. Hows your rear end search going?

Where do you live? That way I can throw you some adds if your close. The other day in the sacramento area I seen a good one, with a r11 overdrive unit on the back. I got him down to 350 I think. All that info is In my email somewhere

Just to be totally clear.....the st400 is this the same as a switch pitch?

When you says useable, are you referring to the fact it should be rebuildsble........or are you wanting one that bolts in and drives.

I have a switch pitch transfer with converter, was told it was working we they removed it......I have never run it....
I would want to refresh it b4 I ran it to be sure.

Just.not totally sure this is what your looking for

I would like to bolt it up and drive. I could attempt a rebuild on one though. Th400's are cheap and plentiful. I just need something to hold up to a stout 455. I have an st300 that came with the car. I was told the original 300 V8 the st300 was bolted to worked until the camshaft snapped in half???

Another option is to use a regular th400 with a bop bellhousing

a regular th400 with a mild stall will say around 2400 will provide the same strength that a st400 will.
A street strip shift kit added will firm shifts and increase the life of the clutches also

You need a 67 case. The 66 case is Nailhead pattern. If you are on a budget, go with a regular BOP TH400, they work great and converters are available

Is the 400 a nailhead? I know the 401 is.

  15. they made a 65-66 sp400 case that wasn't nailhead. it came in sportwagon and LeSabre 400 cars that had small block engines

I think I will focus on a BOP TH400. Thanks though

    I have a 64 th400,it came in a super duty 421 P0ntiac,I also have 2 70 th400's,both rebuilt,one is a SP,it comes with a 12 inch SP torque converter,the other th400 is the super duty 400.I did not even know that it was,but the re-builder told me something about 5 bolts or something.He is a Buick guy big time.Bruno.

  18. No problem. And FYI A ST400 is just a th400 with a variable pitch converter. My transmission is a BOP. A 400 uses the same transmission as a 455 where a 401 and 425 are nailheads and they use a different style bellhousing pattern

Thanks. I was looking around Tri-Shields page the other day and did noticed that earlier years of the th400 can be converted.

Right, you can install a switch-pitch front pump and converter onto a later trans with minor mods. I'm no expert, but they say the 73-ish transmissions have a better valve body than the early 66-67-ish ones. (don't quote me on that!)

A non- sp trans/converter will perform better in the 1/4 mile with the right converter, but the s-p is nice for the street or dual duty.

There's a s/p on Craigslist in San Francisco, $550 tho. I see you found the one just posted here.
