65 Skylark Rear Disc Conversion

I am looking into putting one of the Right Stuff rear drum to disc conversion kits with 11" rotors into my 65 Skylark. The info I am trying to get is if there is an issue with how the wheels will fit in the SLIM wheelwells. I have 275/60-15 MT Drag Radials on I think 4.5" offset rims (whatever the recommended offset is for this size wheel). It is tight but there is no rub. The online research I have done has mentioned that there might be a .25" difference or no difference from drum to discs.

Does anyone have experience with this swap?

    Thanks!

Three things but first, are you talking about using factory Buick steel chrome wheels?

The reason I ask is I had a minor issue with the factory Buick wheel in 15x7 and the RightStuff rear disc that I wound up resolving a unique manor. The rotors are about twice as thick as the drums when they are on the axle. They were a total of about .290" thick. So, an extra .160" is all you need to worry about.

Second, the factory Buick wheel is an odd piece. It has the same center as a 14" wheel, which necks the rim down a good bit. My wheels would not bolt down without hitting the caliper. I marked the caliper and scuffed some off the it and it was still too tight. I ordered new rotors with a deeper hat and moved the bracket for the caliper from the outside to the inside of the backing plate area. I also put a 3mm spacer between the rotor and the wheel. Due to the extra lengths, I swapped my standard studs for Corvette studs that were a bit longer.

Here's my thread on how tight it was and how I managed it.

Ask any questions I haven't answered. It is all working pretty good now and stops on a dime with a nickel in change!

Hmmmm, I am/was going with the Right Stuff brake kit for my 65 Skylark. Sounds like with maybe a 3/16 wheel spacer and some grinding it might fit. This will only be temporary as I will be getting 17" wheels as soon as I know what my backspacing is.

I have no doubt it will work with any 15" wheel except Buick wheels, even then you can fix it with spacers/grinding/creativity.

Yes, they are the 15 x 7 Buick wheels. At least I can now look out for the problem and be prepared for solutions. Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention.
