Wondering if anyones converted to rear discs on a 65 skylark,,,
Im running a disc front and drum rears currently,,,but am thinking of getting a stronger brake system,,,possibly going with C5 vette fronts!!!
Just looking for tips or leads to info to do this!!!!

take a look at my 66 skylark... i run c5 corvette brakes front and rear!! love it. i went with a b body front spindle, drilled the spindle to accept a stock lower ball joint, kore3 billet aluminum hubs, billet caliper brakets, and vette calipers and rotors. in the rear i had to flycut the caliper bracket about .250 but that is because i run a custom 9" with big bearing gm ends. i think all said and dont i was around $1,000.00 for front and rear. The plus is i did get rid of the old style hub and rotor assemble, better geometry with the b body spindle, and saved some weight. i am not sure how much willwood setup would be but i consider the c5 to be compareable with quality.. If you have a problem you can get a c5 rotor/caliper you can buy parts anywhere. You can also use a stock b body hub and rotor assemble and machine the rotor off and machine the hub to accept a c5 slip on rotor to save alot of cash.

$390 for four gm c5 calipers shipped..

    Thanks 66Lark!!!!
Are you running a standard booster or did you go a hydra boost set up off of your power steering??
What size and brand rims are you running??:TU:

You can forget about "factory" wheels fitting.

Ya I don't think the factory wheels would fit too well!!!
I have 17 X 8 with 5" backspace,,,thinking I can fit the smaller of the available corvette rotors in,,,just have to mock some stuff up and see how tight it will be will calipers etc!!!

i used a booster from a 1972 chevelle and a master cylinder from a corvette. i think it was from a 1978 vette with disc -disc. i used a wilwood proportionary valve. If i was to do it again i would just use a s10 master cylinder with the plastic resivoir on the master.. i run billet specialties wheells18x7 front and 20x9 in the back.

you can go to my photobucket. they are old pictures but it has the c5 brake, and alot of the parts and turbo setup.

Both of those are awesome builds!!!:beer
One of the neatest looking 30's trucks Ive ever seen was a '35 international,,,always liked the looks of that brands stuff!!!!
LOVE the sound of the turbo working that nailhead,,,looks like you've put a ton of work into that thing!!!!
Those front brakes look huge on there,,,you'll need them to slow that nail down!!!!
I have printed off the blueprint from the Kore3 website,,and will have to take some measurements to see if the smaller of the corvette rotors and caliper will fit with 17" wheels!!!
My wheels are Billet Speacialties also,,but have the regular stepped lip,,from what i've read,,theres a better chance of fitting big brakes in 17" wheels with a stepped outer lip,,than there is with 17"s with the smooth outer lip!!! I;ll take measurements and find out!!!!
When will your 66 be on the road??

    Thanks Lark!!!
I had checked out their site,,they have some nice packages there,,heard lots of good things about them on another site!!!
I have the stock '65 8.2 axle,,does anyone know if its the same bolt pattern as the later axles that came in GM A body cars???
By bolt pattern/size,,I meen at the end of the axle housing where you would bolt on the bracketry needed!!! Thanks!!

    :
everything i read they will work with 17in wheels. i did have to take the corvette off the calipers but that is because i refused to run front wheel spacers. this is only because the lack of backspacing on my front wheels. About the rear end you can run a 8.5 out of a 68-72 gm a body..or a 12 bolt out of a 64-67 which is big $$$ if you can find either one of these they are not as cheap as they should be. how much power do you plan on putting down? i would make the decision of what type of rear end you go with, with the end in mind. i had a 72 gto 8.5 in my gs but i think ( this is 4 years ago...) that it was 1.5 wider.. dont hold me exactly to it..i went to the 9" with gm ends ,strange s case, detroit locker, moser axles,so i can put down 800 ft lbs of torque with no issues!!!dont think the gs has that much but doesnt mean it wont:Brow:
i have been working on the body work on the buick and both fenders, doors and left quarter is close to being done. all metal work on the body is done, which was new hand made lower door skins, hand made wheel well lips(both sides) and lower quarter panels, windshield upper frame, i also shave the louvers in the front fenders and all the lower chrome mouldings and vinyal top mouldings. lots of welding!! shrinking ,streching ,hammer and dollying of metal..i am doing final body work to get it ready for sealer, featherfill, so i can try to get it ready for paint by the end of may is my goal..I am painting the truck on the second week of may so i am hoping the car i can do after that..

Im not running big power,,compared to what you've got set up!!!
    I have a warmed over 401 Nail,,hooked to a 200 R4,,with 3.55 posi rear in the factory 8.2!!!
I have heard (since I spent all the $$$ rebuilding the 8.2) that they aren't really a super strong rear end,,,but I don't plan on drag racing with it,,its more of a cruiser,,but I have put some $$$ into better suspension pieces,,and think Id like to play around on some auto cross courses once I get everything dialed in,,,thats why im looking at better brakes!!! That,,and it would be nice to have better brakes just for safety on the highway!!!!
For now,,Id like to stick with the stock rear end since i've spent the $$$ to get it rebuilt and a posi installed,,,just not sure if the mounting flange at the axle ends are the same dimensions as later GM set ups,,or if I will have to build brackets for the rear calipers!!!!
BTW,,,what kind of power numbers is that turbo nail putting out??

No idea yet how much power much i am guessing ALOT of torque!!i took it around the block yesterday and when it started to spool it really woke that nailhead up. So i will be putting it on the dyno once i get all the bugs worked out of the whole car. right now i am finishing putting back in the restored dash and instrument cluster i put in the car. After that i will be hoping to seal and getting it primmed again and shot with some paint.. not sure what color to paint it!!

it sounds like you are making the right choice with staing with the 8.2, get your money out of it. i think the rear c5 brakes can fit in a 16 inch rim.... i can go measure the rear and let you know if rim size is a problem.
