I replaced my '65 Skylark's old fuel sending unit with a new one (Spectra part# FG88C). While the old unit had a push-on connector for the wire going to the dash, the new unit's connector is threaded. It looks like a push-on connector can still grab onto it, but why did they choose to thread it?

One the wire-end, my old connector has pretty much turned to dust and has to be replaced. Do I have to match this connector type or can I just replace it with a lug and use a nut to hold it onto the new (threaded) connector? Can this connection be exposed to the elements or should it be sealed off like the old connector boot tried to do?
