Went and looked a 65 Skylark Convertible today VIN is 444675K104709, The car had a 300 2barrel with an ST300 trans. I noticed no electrical for the trans on the manifold or throttle linkage. I did notice it had the clutch pedal cut off. The shift indictor was blacked out and the bracket for the z-bar was on the frame. Is there any way from the VIN that I can tell what this car was originally equipt with.

Is there any leftover standard column shift stuff on the car like two levers at the bottom of the column tube?

VIN....no. It would tell you if it was a V6 or a V8.
The cowl data plate might have some codes on it. 2L would be 4 speed, 2X would be st300 automatic.
Not all plants put all the codes on there tho. There might be a build sheet stuck in the rear seat springs with the codes.
Driveshaft for a manual car would be one piece. An automatic had the one with a rubber sleeve between the inner/outer tube at the rear.
How about the steering column and the column plate at the firewall? does the plate have a hole for the clutch rod?

I will go check these things out tomorrow. Will the cowl plate give any engine data or is that only on the block?
I have looked at the production #s for that year and they only state V6 1,186 built or V8 10,456, built in the convertibles not what size V8.

    I will go back tomorrow

    Thanks

    The Skylark convertible VIN would be 44367xxxx for a V6, and 44467xxxx for a V8. The V8 was a 300, 2bbl or 4bbl. GS had the 401.
If he has the warranty booklet with the protecto-plate, it would show the engine code and trans code.
You could check the engine stampings and see if it matches the last 6 digits of the cars VIN.
