I need to see where the splatter paint stops in back of the trunk. I am ready to paint, but don't know how much of the three braces around the tail light housings are splattered.

    Thanks - Cheryl :)

    Splatter Paint

I looked and these are the best unrestored trunk pictures I have.

If you look in the 65 Gallery, there are a couple other trunk pictures in there but I cannot comment on how correct or original they are.

I can send you some pictures of mine, but I'm sure that the trunk has been touched up at some time and there may be more paint there than originally intended. When I looked at the three brackets holding the taillights in, all three were covered 99% with splatter paint.

    Hope this helps you some,

    Chris

    Thanks Chris!

Mine had red paint on the tops of the outside braces and the latch atached to the middle one. It had a bad splatter repaint, and had an exterior repaint as well. I could not tell tell what had been what. The blue car in the pictures you linked has a similar paint scheme to the one that mine had.

    Cheryl,
Does you car still have the original spatter paint in it, or have you removed it all or replaced sections of the trunk floor? The reason I ask is because if you have area that are not already covered in the spatter paint, I highly recommend spraying the inside of the trunk with some gray enamel paint before putting on the spatter paint. It will take about half as much of that expensive spatter paint, plus the regular enamel paint will seal/waterproof it wheras the water based spatter paint doesn't seal very well--even with the clear coat over it. I simply used two cans of gray rust-oleum in spray cans on two of my cars--works perfect--the spatter covers it well and sticks to it great, plus it is a close gray to the spatter and it doesn't take much spatter paint to cover it.

Here is what it looked like before spraying the spatter in it:

    Brian,

Thanks for the tip. I had already done it by the time of your reply. I replaced sections for the body mounts, a gas tank mount, and wheel well sections. I used a little fiberglass filler over those spots and in a few rough spots. Then the whole trunk was sanded, light grey primered, sanded again, and painted with splatter paint. The color of the primer cut down on the amount needed, but it still used quite a bit. Oh well, next time I will use the grey enamal. I have a picture below. I will finish the red around the inside lip when the jams are ready. I don't know if I can bring myself to put anything in it (jack, spare) for fear of messing it up!

I wish I had talked to you sooner Cheryl. It is best to spray the spatter paint after the outside of the car is fully painted. I know that seems backwards, but you will paint it without the taillights in it, and when the guy at the body shop starts wet sanding the primer to get it ready for the paint, all that nasty water will run in the taillight holes and ruin the spatter paint--even with the clear coat over it. I learned that years ago when I did my '66. I had my '65 GS painted with the trunklid off of it so there would be no masking line between the trunk jamb and rest of the car body.

I think it will be OK. I will just make it a nice bib out of garbage bags. Besides the wet sander/painter is me anyway. I am trying out Dupont Nason. It is an AE with a hardener (epoxy-like paint) that lays out pretty flat. I tried it on the tank and side covers of the bike in the last picture, and was very impressed. We will see what the new-old Sata can do with a whole car. I can always sand it down and do it again if needed!
