I decided to put a manual steering box on the GS. However, the pitman arm taper is smaller than the power steering pitman taper. I have read a few posts of guys reaming them out, which I would like to do. My question for you guys is what reamer to use? Any help would be appreciated.
One of the Spike TV shows showed them using a tapered drill bit for that purpose. The rag joint coupler will need to be changed too.....the manual boxes have a 3/4" shaft, and the power boxes have a 13/16" shaft.
I have the correct rag joint and I am aware of the tapered bit. Just wondering if anyone new the correct one. Guess I'll have to pull out the power pitman arm and mic the two of them and see if MSC has the correct bit.
I have to correct myself.... If the splined end of the pitman arm doesn't fit the box, you should get another pitman arm. I'd bet the larger diameter has more splines than the smaller one... Reaming it ain't gonna work. If the centerlink end of the pitman arm has a hole that is too small, it can be opened up with a tapered drill. Some early centerlinks used a smaller stud....I think it was 13/16" vs 7/8". Ya better check that too! Many of the resto parts suppliers have pitman arms for about $70.
Guess I should have mentioned that I do have the correct splined end from the manual box. It in fact is the centerlink end that is to small of a taper. I have looked online and found that they made 2 styles of manual arms as well as different power steering arms. All of the websites just show manual arm replacement part, but no size. I didn't want to order what I already have.
