I found a 65 GS (skylark model) at a garage sale..(goes to show you never know what you will find). It's partially dismantled due to a wreck. It looks all original and has the 401 w/ 4spd. He says it used to be a 2x4 car before some jerk stole the intake and carbs. He still has the monster "wildcat 445" aircleaner on the cowl though. I am looking for information so that I can verify that this car is a GS. What vin codes if any will tell me. What engine #s are correct for it? I found that the 2x4 was dealer installed in '65 so I guess to find out if that was original he'd have to havea window sticker huh?

Looking for the boxed convertible frame is usually the quickest check, then the VIN, then the LR code 401. And yes I believe 2x4 was a dealer installed item. A little over 3000 4spd HTs were made in 1965. Sounds like a good find.
Hey 67Goat, That's a great find!!! For 1965, the Skylark GS was an option package. In 1966, the GS became a separate model with a unique VIN. So for 65, the GS shares the model number with the standard V8 Skylark: 44427 Thin pillar coupe 44437 Hardtop 44467 Convertible Check the engine for the production code and vin.....See the valley cover under the intake?...the codes are stamped on the block at the front edge of that cover.....Eng code (located on pass side)should be 'LR' for the GS 401. VIN will be stamped on the drivers side. VIN will also be on the tailshaft of the BW T10 4 speed trans. Boxed convertible frame was used on the GS, As were bucket seats, bigger 15/16" front sway bar, and larger dia front brake wheel cylinders. Battery is located on right side on GS 401 cars. Other Skylarks had battery on passenger side. Steering column shaft is splined at rag joint, not welded on as on 'larks..... GS's only had the fender 'ports', 'larks had the ports and full length side trim... And if you have the protecto-plate, it'll show the eng and trans codes..... Soooo....are you keeping it?????
