My 65 has the original pump and cylinders on it and is filled with what seems to be brake fluid (DOT 3). The 1965 factory manual also states that the hydroelectric system uses brake fluid. Every time I check the posts here regarding fluid, people are saying to use trans fuid or power steering fluid. Does anyone know when GM switched away from brake fluid. The 2 do not mix.

    thanks

I didnt go with brake fluid because brake fluid breaks down many plastics and rubbers. (your brake rubber is ok because it's designed for that fluid) I'm not sure anyone really knows what fluid to use. My 70 has polyetheline lines (a creamy white translucent color) and i'm not sure how brake fluid wears on them but the old set of lines had become very brittle and i think it's because the previous owner put in brake fluid. trans fluid dosen't brake down plastics as quickly as brake fluid, so i think that is why it is the fluid of choice.

the sales guys at Hydro-E-Letric recommended using ATF fluid as well.
