    Hey all,
Does anybody know where I can get 2-step metering rods and jets to dial in my '65 AFB? There's a large hesitation when I punch it even moderately before the engine is completely warmed up. It has heavy step-up springs...I tried shimming the step up springs and it helped but mileage went into the toilet. Timing is 10-11 degrees initial, 30 total, all in by 3000. That's the most timing it will take. I'm running 12 degrees manifold vacuum advance. Thanks for your help finding the parts!

    Aaron,

You might try a larger shooter or bend the linkage on your accelerator pump to get more shot. Then take the shim out of the metering rod spring. This should cover up the hesitaion and put the mileage back where it was.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I tried a squirter from an Edelbrock 600, and all three pump holes...it's weird...The car ran fine but had an off idle stumble with the E-brock that I could never get out and I threw everything at it. This Carter has an all over stumble until the engine hits about 180 degrees. I've never run a Holley, but I'm thinking about trying it! :) OK maybe not...

    Aaron,

Sounds like you might need to adjust the linkage on your accerator pump to get the duration for the pump shot correct. I don't know that you would have better results with a holley, you may end up fighting the same tuning issues. If it were me, I would set the carb back to where you only had the off idle hesitation and concentrate on curing that problem. Work on the accelarator pump, shooter, choke, etc.

Am I reading correctly that problems go away once the engine is warm? If so, adjust the choke a tad richer.

For a stock engine the choke should be adjusted such that: with the engine cold, the engine off, and an ambient temperature of 68 degrees F., the choke butterfly should just touch closed.
