Hi, I have a 64 LeSabre convertible. Over the winter one of my projects was to change out the steering gear and some of the suspension. I changed out the sway bar bushings and brake reaction rod bushings. Also the center link, idler arm, outer tie rod ends and clamps. At $100 each I reused the original inner tie rod ends. Rebuilt the whole package, now it was time for a wheel alignment. I asked around and was told to go to a local family owned business about an hour away. They said they were busy but I could leave my car and pick it up when it was done. Long story short - my ride fell through but I didn't want to reschedule. I brought the car and told them I'd be waiting until it was done. He said, no promises on time, but we'll get it as soon as we can. I went out to the parking lot and sat expecting the worst.
It wasn't 10 minutes later an older guy came out and said lets get started on the LeSabre. He took it for a test drive and I explained what work I did. He smiled and said this car was like 'old home week', he really liked the car.
We went into the shop and he started to work on the car while we carried on a conversation, mostly about cars and his experiences. After a little bit I started to work on the car with him, and together we worked on the car, the whole time we were having a great shop conversation - you know the kind - what we all live for. It was funny, the whole time the other mechanics kept looking over at us (me) and I kept waiting for one of them to say 'insurance regulations prevent you from being in the shop'. But that comment never came.
As we were taking the car out for a test drive I asked - I'm sorry, I never asked but what is your name - he said '...my name is Lew Sturgeon - I started the business in 1969 and the 3 guys in the shop are my sons...' [that explains why I never got kicked out of the shop] I was on my way home (back to work) in less than 2 hours.
Overall Lew did a great job on my car. Also - there is a genuine love of older cars there too. I highly recomment the shop - it's worth the drive. I don't know if I am allowed to name the shop - but I will. Newbies in New Bethlehem, PA, north of Pittsburgh.
If you go, just tell them the guy with the 64 Buick sent you. It was a great experience and next year when I do my ball joints and swing arm bushings, I know where I'm going.
