I bought a '64 300 motor that is in pieces and fairly complete. Aluminum heads with a valve job done, block thats been honed and a polished crank. I need things like head, main, and intake bolts. I have the main caps but, no bolts. My main question is this, are the bolts on a '64 the same as the other 300 motors? I have a line on a '65 300 that I can rob all the hardware I want and get the 4bbl carb and intake for $40. I don't need the intake and I know it doesn't fit the '64 but $40 seems like a deal. Is $40 a decent price? (Carb is CRUSTY) Engine is at the builders house now. Please share any opinions or suggestions especially on the bolt situation. Thanks, Brian

I would be interested in the intake if its the 65 cast iron one and I could probably help with some bolts if needed.I think the 65 bolts would be fine and I do not see no reason why they would not interchange...You need to keep the main caps in the right positions in the block and hopefully you marked them.....

I rebuilt a 65 motor using the 65 block and rotating assembly and the top end and accessories from a 64. As far as I could tell visually, the mains, crank, conecting rods were all the same, so the bolts on those are probably all the same. The timing cover bolts, oil pan bolts and the valve cover bolts are the same (although the 65 had different washers/spreaders under the valve cover bolts). The oil pump pick up bolts and oil pump cover bolts LOOK the same as do the harmonic ballancer bolts and the distributer hold down bolts.

I think some 64 300 engines have 12 head bolts instead of 8 (or at least that is what the photo on my 64 repair manual shows with a extra head bolt below and inboard of each exhaust port). My 64 heads only had 8 head bolts though with an identical pattern to the 65. In any case even if you have the 8 bolt heads, the head bolts themselves are not exactly the same; the 65 bolts I got had a washer and the 64 had a machined round plate below the hex on the head bolt with no washer. I used the 64 headbolts (with the 64 heads), so the thread size is the same on both blocks but I am not sure about the length.

I don't know about the intake manifold bolts.

$40 for a 4bbl intake and carb seems reasonable.

I believe the main caps have their placement numbers cast on them. Is that correct? I thought I saw numbers on there. All the parts were in boxes with no type of labels or sorting. I have a 300 in my Skylark now that I will be robbing of parts but, I don't want to tear it out until this motor is done and I can do the swap. I'll let you know on that intake. Brian
