    Howdy,

Can you put a 63 HVAC control unit, meaning the one up on the underside of the dash and the 2 knobs on the console, and the 63 ashtray onto a 65 console or do you need to swap them for it to work? As a side note, what do the knobs on the console do?

    Thanks,

You can do it, but why?

    HI,
You can do the swap, but the 63 HVAC controls are noteable for their numerous problems, especially with the control cables binding up and near total lack of any replacement parts. Buick did a significant redesign of the HVAC system controls on the 64 Riv, and it was for a very good reason. I would consider changing a 63 over to 64 and up heater controls, but I would never retro fit 63's to a newer Riv. IMHO, Tim

well its mostly to get the controls out of the console to free up space for gauges and scary enough cupholders. I got to check in with a source about setting up an automatic climate control that might make this easier. I'd really like to figure out how to fit the 63 ashtray into the console so I can use it to hide cupholders. I'm trying to build a classic car that has all the features that people love of the new ones with the soul of a classic.

One option that I have thought about is a gauge set up that street rodders use on 47-54 Chevy pick up trucks. It's large, round and contains fuel, oil pressure, voltage and coolant temp gauges with a factory look to it. Not sure how close to the diamter of the original Riv idiot light housing, but I bet it would work, look stock and be much less of a hassle than changing out the A/C controls! Most Street Rod suppliers have a version of this gauge set, and I'm sure would have dimensions for you. Take Care, Tim

Well its more for the 63 ashtray than for moving the HVAC setup as there are plenty of 64-65's with the console gauge mod with the stock HVAC in there. I want to put cupholders behind the flip down plate for ashtray.
