Does anybody remember seeing a 1962 Skylark with a 401 nailhead. I remember seeing a picture of it in either an old Kennedy Bell newsletter or a GSCA article. I seemed to remember it had been destoked for some reason (maybe for less torque & more traction). Anyway, it must have been the worlds fastest 62' Skylark!
I want to see it if anyone has pics. I have a 62 and a rebuilt 425 to shoe horn in it. I have looked at it many times. May require some firewall mods. I know the heater has to go.
61 Special with a 401 I did some checking and found my memory was a little off. It was a 1961 Special. This article was in a August, 1982 edition of the Kenne-Bell newsletter. The text states: It has a 401" nailhead bored and de-strocked to a high revving 388". Rear is a Chevy 12 bolt. Trans is a four speed.
We put a 425 into a 62 skylark many years ago, the heater assy had to go. The biggest problem was the exhaust because of where the steering box is located. We made a set of funky loking front dump headers for it, the collectors pointed stright down in front, then we made tailpipes that curled up to meet the headers. The car had a t-400 s-p and a 12 bolt rear with 2.56 gears. Some drunk ran over the front end of the car up in Alburquerque years ago. Jim Burek
Jim, How did it run? What ever happened to those funky headers? Not laying around with dust on them are they?
The car ran pretty good,it was really long legged with 2.56 gears. The 425 was stock other than forged pistons and a kb mark 2 cam, stock heads. The headers are long gone. We did this car back in the late 70's. Jim Burek
A stock 425 in that little car still is a handful. I have a hardtop sitting out back of the shop that may be a future project for the big Nailhead. I don't know the weight of the car (62 Sky.), but I can pick it up with the frontend loader on the farm tractor and carry it where I need to without damage. The later Skys. are not that easy to carry! And I don't even try with a Riv. parts car!! Next time you custom build a set of headers, don't sell them for 30 years or so please!!
john, i personally know that car. it belonged to my buddy bob marshall. he lives in arizona now. top was chopped 4",it was a 401 with engine mods, t-10 from my 66 gs, narrowed 12 bolt, seats from a 76 regal fit perfectly. had stock exhaust manifolds. this car would FLY!!!! needed 3 hands to drive it, 2 hands on the wheel because it was real touchy and 1 to shift. we are looking for that car. if anybody knows its whereabouts, please contact me. john
The car was sold out of the Columbia CT. area about5-8 years ago. I know the car had a Nailhead in it at the time but I am pretty sure it was just a 401. I looked a the car but was not really interested in it. The original motor is owned by Dave Marshall-Bob's son and is going to be put into a hot rod early Ford pick up. I last saw Dave about 3 years ago when he was still buying parts to rebuild the engine. I have not heard of any more since then.
joe, bob sold the car to that idiot in columbia. tried to find out who he sold it to, but got a smartass answer. it was repainted to a pale yellow w/full hubcaps, aka bonneville car. dave now lives with bob in arizona doing hvac. bob is building a 64 lark chop top with a nailhead. john
