62 Buick Sheetmetal vs Chevy? (specifically trunk)

I have a 62 Invicta and the trunk is in ROUGH shape. I see that I can get Chevy stampings and some of the trunk stamping LOOK correct. Can anyone tell me if a Full-sized 62 Chevy trunk stamping is the same as the full-sized 62 Buick?

How about Chevy rocker panels and floor boards? Are any the same as the 62 Buick?

Follow-up question- anyone have a web-page or list of compatible 6X Chevy to 62 Buick compatible parts?

Not to burst your bubble, but I think you Buick has the gas tank forward of the trunk and chev has theirs below. Making the Buick trunk a LOT deeper.

    Wrong, the Chevy's still have the tank foreward of the truck above the rear axle. This pic is from a '63 Impala on eBay;

I can't comment on the exact fit of the Chevy pieces, but alot of stuff is pretty close, close enough that it will usually work with a little tweaking. Floor pans are being reproduced by a company, the name slips my mind at this point though. I think they were selling them on eBay too. With that being said, I'd bet the truck would be pretty close, the floor pans are already being repoped, and I'd think the rockers would be pretty close as well.

You are correct about the Buick gas tank, I don't know about the 62 Chevy tank... The good news is that the trunk well can be reused, it's the trunk floor outer panels that are 'ventilated'...

    I'm wondering if this:
    1962-64 TRUNK FLOOR OUTER PANEL
    ...is useable.

As for the well, It's in bad shape but as I said above, I COULD reuse it. I'd rather buy the Chevy well and tack on a band on it to deepen it (if it would fit)...

Any other input as to Buick sheet metal options?

I'm fairly certain that outer panel will not work. The Chevy trunk is more flat on the sides, where as the Buick piece is raised and kinda has a hump.

And we are basically SOL on repoped sheet metal at this point. You might want to see if they repop any sheet metal for the big Pontiac cars. Sometimes those pieces are pretty close as well.

That's good to know. Maybe Chev used the same sending unit!

Why did Pontiac have their gas tank below the trunk pan??

That's a pretty good bet. I'm fairly confident that either a Chev unit or one from a full size Poncho should be close.

You've got to get creative working on these old Buicks. A lot more stuff is repoped for Impala's, even Catalina's. Sometimes you just have to make stuff work.

I ran across this 1962 Catalina video on you tube and it has a trunk shot... The trunk is FLAT so, that sheet metal wouldn't work either.

Take a look at 1:00 into the video...

Yes, the Pontiac gas tank is under the trunk, therefore not as deep.

I have an AMES catalog of pontiac parts. Lots of parts look familair. You just have to be smart. I wish someone would put out an interchange catalog.

Here is a link to the place where I got the rear body mounts and the side panels of the trunk floor for my '62 from. They also have floor pans.

I still need to figure something out for the center section (the deep well portion) since I can see daylight through mine. So, if anybody finds any alternates, please share. :TU:

Got a question, though it is not sheet metal related. Am trying to find a heater core for a 62 Electra that is leaking and beyond repair. No luck so far.
Since you folks seem to be into these older large Buicks, any suggestions on where to find one would be a help as the chevy ones don't look like they fit.

    Thanks!

Unfortunately, your SOL. Your only option is to get it re-cored. That's what I had to do with my '62.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yep, kinda what I thought. My friend with the car is festering over getting "new" instead of recored. Looks like he has to cough up the $$$ for the recore.

    Thanks again

No problem. Just make sure the place you get to do the recore does good work. My recored unit started leaking after only a year. I got fed up with it and just ripped it out permantly. I don't use the heat anyways  .

I've had 5 radiators re-cored throughout my life by 2 different places and they have always done a great job. Never had one leak.

    I wouldn't worry about a recore.

I have a good trunk from a 62 Invicta 4DHT for $200. We would want to take measurements first to be sure it will fit, if you are putting it in a 2DHT.

I know mine is different, but I bought it off the shelf at NAPA for my '66. did you try them?

IF you do end up needing to recore, find a good local REPUTABLE shop to do it for you.

Two years ago when I had mine done, I checked with Napa, and many other retail sources. Nobody had anything '62 specific, or anything that was really close.
