i have a 61 electra with power brake set up with the big drums (its a hearse). i'm looking for a brake upgrade for safty or performance. i have power drums and big drums they are. i would love to switch to disc but that would be pricey i'm sure. i do not have a master with a resivor. i just picked up a complete brake booster from 63 oldsmobile holiday, its in great shape but i found out i need a dual resivor set up from a late 60's gm for a better upgrade. i just listed the 63 booster on ebay since i'm not going to use it. my question is what is a reasonably priced brake upgrade i could do. someone said with my stock 61 booster i could use a single resivor master cylinder as a slight upgrade, otherwise to use my stock all drums set up i would need a late 60's dual resivor booster and cylinder, and if i want discs its all custom and big money. any help would be appreciated

Even the standard Buicks from 61 (meaning the non-hearse ones) had large drums. The drums on my 62 Electra 225 pretty much fill the rims. I was researching a brake upgrade for my 62 (which should be very close to your 61) and was very impressed with a kit from Scarebird Mechanical . It uses front rotors and calipers from a 71-76 full size GM, which are pretty beefy and should give good stopping power. I will probably go with that kit, but will be waiting until I move, since I will be moving in about 9 months and don't really feel like taking on that kind of project before I move.
