I think I might have read somewhere in maybe a hotrod or car/driver mag. about some car having a 6 speed automatic, and I can't help but wonder, is there any cars that are equipped with a 6 speed auto? I know there is 6 speed manual trannys, and I do know of 5 speed automatics, but not sure of 6 speed automatics?

    Thanks

Well, actually I've heard about the gear vendors o.d. before, but im actually talking about a 6 speed automatic tranny in a newer car? It wasn't a buick, but it was another car, maybe the '05 vette? Not sure....

Come to think about it, I think the '05 vettes have the 4 spd automatic overdrive trannys. Now I wish I had bought that mag., I was just scamming through it in the store, but can't remember what kind of car it was. It was a few months back.

    2005 Caddilac STS's have 6sp 6L60E automatic transmissions. Mercedes offeres a 7spd auto.

Corvette is also slated to receive a 6-speed automatic.

    BMWs have them.

But, if you were to buy a Corvette, why would you buy an auto? and not a stick? lol  :beer

Well, for one, im lazy, and 2, well, lets just say I want a more consistent/faster shifting tranny for the strip(No offense to the hardcore manual tranny guys, I like manual trannys too). I don't have anywhere near the money to buy a vette, so the main reason I ask is that I was thinking of doing something different with a future project when I get another one, my next car I get I want some top end speed to it. Mainly my focus with my car now is for a take off car, but my next muscle car/older car, I want to make it a top end rocket, so I'll need some extra gears. :3gears:

    Thanks

    six speed auto

Cody I have read about some way you can convert a 4l80e automatic to use overdrive in all forward gears. I read it in some car mag. givbes you six gears. Send me an email sometime and maybe we'll have to get together and have a Buick bash. Only 20 miles away it seems like we should. Bernie Steffen zstef@mchsi.com

The Pontiac G6 and Equinox SS/Torrent GT will have 6 speed auto's for 06. I'm sure other GM's will but these are the only models that I know of so far.

We have not seen any 6l60e trans in the shop yet but f they are anything like the 5l40e/5l50e trans we have, you will not wantthem for any kind of performance cars. I think they are based on the same 'modular' trans from what I got off the GM training site. I would recommend a 700r4, it has 3.00+ first gear to get you rolling with highway gears plus the over drive. Many guys can build them to handle serious power now and they are relatively cheap. Plus the new GM trans have so much eclectronics in them, retrofitting them to a different engine would really suck. You would need NASA to help out, assuming they can figure out why the fuel guage on the shuttle does not work!!!!!

I heard that the 700r4 is a very durable and yet reliable/power trusting tranny, im getting some ideas of what I may want for a future project after I get done w/ the '76.(pipedreaming for now. ) For the '76 im going to be aiming it as a take off car more than anything. Thanks for the advice/opinion/and info. :TU: :Comp:

Sounds GOOD Cody! I agree with the shifting faster part 100%.

Cody - You'd be better off with a well built 200-4r trans. :TU: For starters, it's got the right bellhousing pattern. And, it can be built to handle substantially more power than a 700r4.

Cody.....Add at least about $3,000 to your dream to make it reality - thats what a crate trans plus converter plus aftermarket computer would cost to get it into the car

As I understand it, the way they get more gears is to take the conventional trans and apply bands and clutches at other than the "standard" times to get inbetween ratios out of sun & planetary sets. I'm not truly up on it but something like first without a band is a low first then first with the band is second and normal second without the band is 3rd and so on. This lets them have wider traditional ratios while splitting them much like a gearvendor does.

Did any of that makes sense?

My 2015 Dodge Ram work truck has a 8 speed. It works pretty well. Not obnoxious, but sometimes it skips gears, but when pulling or accelerating briskly, it goes thru all 8.
