    Hi,

can anybody give me a helping hand. I would like to know which body mounting pads are used on a '59 Buick Invicta Convertible? I don't have the original body pads, the only information i got from Steelrubber are these part numbers: 1359620, 1190478, 1195719, 1377367.
Also I don't know how many from which kind i need.
    Any help is appreciated!!!!

Have a nice day - and keep on cruising!!!!!

    Niko,

    Welcome to the board....:TU:

I don't have an answer to your question, but I'm in search for a '59 Invicta bonnet moulding. The chrome strip that goes on the front of the bonnet (or hood in some dialect  ).

Maybe you know a good place for '59 Invicta parts ?

Nikoh-- The 1959 Buick Chassis Service Manual has your answer (they're on eBay all the time). Has a diagram illustrating how the body mounts are configured. Both closed & open body style '59s use 23 mounts, but the convertible uses some different ones in some spots, like thinner rubber 'donuts' and steel shims in some places to combat body flex. I ordered body mounts for my Invicta 2-dr hardtop from Steele, and they are an excellent match for the originals. I picked them from the catalog myself (which maybe why it took 2 orders), but I imagine Steele can recommend what you need with competence.

I had an additional problem in that a number of my body mount washers were rusted or damaged during removal. I could not find washers of the same overall size & thickness with the same size bolt hole (to keep them from moving around), so I made my own. I was almost finished when I realized I didn't need to bother making them round- square washers would've worked just as well.

Erik-- you can try www.fremansauto.com- I've bought from them a few times over the years and been quite satisfied... and there's always persistant eBay searches...

Sorry- this is going to be a long reply, but I want to be thorough.

I bought 2 different part numbers. #50-0506-48 is a rubber 'donut' about 47 mm across x 16 mm high with an inner extension of rubber about another 5 mm high. This part number also includes a steel tube that fits inside the donut/extension. The other piece I bought to complete ONE body mount is #50-0507-48. This donut measures about 50 mm wide and 19 mm thick and also fits over the steel tube.

These 2 rubber piece fit together: #50-0506-48 (the one with the steel tube) sits between the body shell & the frame and #50-0507-48 fits on the underside of the frame outrigger, then your bolt goes up thru them both. The steel tube adds lateral strength to the mount and the steel tube keeps the rubber from being overtightened/crushed. I have test fitted these to my car's frame (I haven't re-mounted the body yet) and they fit perfectly.

From what I can tell via the Buick Chassis Manual (Buick shows detailed sectional views of each body mounting point)- the convertibles are different thusly:

The 2 mounts at the 'rear bumper crossmember' at the tail end of the frame... AND the double outriggers just behind the front wheels on the outside of the frame rails... these SIX mounts DO NOT use a donut on the bottom under the frame. There is the usual #50-0506-48 between the body & frame, but below it is just a steel washer & the bolt- no lower #50-0507-48 donut. I believe this is to 'tie down' the more flexible convertible body- since it's at the 4 corners of the shell.

ALL the other mounts ALSO have a steel washer BETWEEN the body and #50-0506-48.

Now although the sectional views of both the open & closed car mounts appear to be of slightly different thicknesses, bear in mind these were in fact hand-drawn views; tho very neat, there are subtle aspects that suggest these are not neccessarily of 'blueprint' quality. Nothing in the captions or the text implies that these are different mounts themselves- I believe firmly that when they look the same (including slight differences in thicknesses), that they are intended to be the same. But I am NOT positive on this, especially with Steele giving you (4) part numbers.

So... if my math is correct, you would need a quantity of (23) of #50-0506-48 and (17) of #50-0507-48 (plus you need bolts & washers).

The only other mount I see in the 2002 Steele catalog is #50-0508-48; "1958-1960" This is very similar to #50-0507-48 (same diameter, slightly thinner), BUT it has a nut & washer molded into the rubber. The nut PROTRUDES from the donut; IT WILL NOT WORK PROPERLY-- the rubber donut must be flush to the body & frame! Steel does not list any other body mounts for '59 Buick in their 2002 catalog.

....I just went to their website, searched for 59 Buick rubber parts, and only the part numbers I listed above were shown (with diagrams). The numbers you posted earlier (1359620, 1190478, 1195719, 1377367) appear to be original 1959 numbers; because in the description for #50-0506-48 it states "replaces #1195719". I'd ask Steele which Steele numbers correspond to the original Buick numbers, and see if they have them all and can give you a count. If they can't (I wouldn't be surprised- I don't think they're quite that good), post back here and let me know.

If they're telling you you have 4 different mounts originally, but Steele only sells 2 of them, what are your options? I would think you are stuck going with the 2 they have and shim where neccessary to equalize things (the Chassis Manual allows for this on converts only).

BTW, both open & closed car body mounts require 25 ft/lbs of torque to tighten.

Waitaminnit... upon further examination of Steele's website... Steele didn't tell you that YOU had 4 different mounts, but that THEY had 4 different mounts! I can tell you that part #70-2165-48 was NOT on my '59 Invicta coupe anywhere. It's coming back to me that Steele was not very helpful on the phone, which is why I had to place 2 orders to get everything I needed.

Go with the mounts I suggested: (23) of #50-0506-48 and (17) of #50-0507-48. While Steele's parts sure seem to be of excellent quality, the phone help is less so. Let us know how everything turns out, please!

    WQ59B: THANK YOU!!! :TU::TU::TU::TU::TU::TU:

I called Steele and was very unsatisfied with there help. They couldn't tell me anything about the right body mounting pads on my car. BUT I found you and you made it really clear.
I just finished the order at Steele and looking forward to get the parts.

    Once aganin Thanks!
