I ordered a set of rear wheel bearings for my 57 Special from"Cars inc" and found the seals that came with them do not fit in the bearings. The bearings had grease seals in them which I removed but the oil seal provided does not fit. Also the convex on the bearing which finally comes to rest against the axle once pressed on should be on the same side as the oil seal but is not-the bearing can not be turned around- which would put the seal in the right place- because there is no convex on the other side of the bearing.Someone tell me its a joke.Dont buy wheel bearings or seals off Cars inc.

I would take the old bearings and seals to your local auto parts store and see if they can cross reference a part number from the numbers that are stamped in the old parts. The numbers should cross over.

Also bring the new parts as a reference just to make sure the old numbers dont cross reference to the new parts you already have. That may be the problem here. Might just be wrong in the book. I would hold judgement till you figure the mystery out.

FWIW, i've bought quite a bit of little stuff from CARS for a 70 GS i'm redoing, and i'd have to say that most all of their stuff is sub-standard quality, and the one guy that takes the calls is pretty damn rude.......looking forward to talking to them face to face in BG!!!...

I think its more of a regional thing. Sometimes people from NY/ NJ come off as rude to people from other areas of the country. We're not really. I never picked up on any rudeness from CARS myself. Ive ordered many item from CARS. Ive always been satisfied.

Thanks guys-so far it appears that the bearings have the outer and inner races reversed on assembly and the bearings have only got one number on them-could they be made in China? When I spin the bearing it has a lot of sideways movement-maybe 1/16".Not good.

It has sideways movement when installed or just spinning in your hand? If therplay is when its just spinng in your hand, that doesnt mean anything

Are the inner and outer bearing the same size?

what brand are the new bearings?

What part number is on the old one vs the new one?

Do the new ones phsically look the same?

Can you take any pictures of whats going on. Might give me a better understanding of whats going on here.

Thanks again for your replies guys-there seems to be only one number on the bearing and it does match one of the four numbers on the old one.The bearing looks the same except the inner which slides onto the axle is the wrong way round-with curved seating surface facing inwards which puts the oil seal on the opposing face.No matter which way you turn the bearing it is wrong. There is no brand name on the bearing which makes me suspicious.I talked to Kanters and they can gaurantee their bearings will fit and are supplied with seal already installed.Unfortunately being some distance away in New Zealand, by the time parts arrive here the return period for misfitting parts and the cost of return shipping plus the dollar value difference makes returning parts not an option.Anyway you know how it goes with cars-you just have to keep going because it's worth it in the end.:TU:

It's not a regional thing, trust me. Im 90 miles from NYC and haven't come across anyone more obnoxious than the guy mentioned above. I've purchased alot of items from them and Ive had nothing but problems. Ive brought this up on one other thread, and it seems to be the same response every time.

Um, without being rude or picking on you, if they are a constant problem, why do you continue to do business with them? If you have problems with a supplier and they don't make it right or at least give you some kind of satisfaction, stop doing business with them!

I purchased alot of items but only on two occasions. I understand where youre coming from but the first order I made through them was around a $1000 bill. Crappy transmission filter that didnt fit, NOS stickers that were actually POS and looked nothing like the origional ones, a thermostat housing made of steel when its supposed to be aluminum. The list goes on and on. The last time I purchased from them I recieved the wrong exhaust valve and a note in the package(that was a week late)saying that they didnt have the piston rod that was in their system. I dont know much but thats no way to run a business. If I was to use them a third time I would be a complete idiot.

I was down at Cars in August of last year. I picked up an order for a friend of mine who has a few 53 buicks as well as a 54. The order was roughly 10,000 dollars worth. They were missing a couple of things but assured me that my buddy would receive them when they arrived. Keep in mind we are in Western Canada, so shipping was a concern. They paid for the shipping, and the quality of the pieces that he received were average or above average. I know he had been trying to put this deal together for a couple of years, trying to get the right price with an order of this size. Judging by some of the comments I've read, maybe we were fortunate in getting what we wanted.I just wish this company as well as others, would have a little more consistency in their products. Moroso is one we have had trouble with, but they cover their butts by telling you "some modifications may be required for your application". Just my two cents. Jim
