 Anyone have ideas, or any info on how to install aftermarket guages and make them look OEM in the dash??? :Brow: We are building a 4L80E trans brake equipped, lockup trans and putting it into my 1971 GS. I was thinking of using a programable speedo in the dash, any other ideas?

    Thanks, Larry

Check out www.classicinstruments.com they have several different series gages. Pricey, but customizable and American-made.

They also feature a programmable speedometer module for the speedos they offer:

I'm running one of their tachs on my column and it's a gorgeous piece.

I for one would like to know how that 4L80E works out.:TU:

I want a variable pitch 4L80E with lockup, dammit.

    Oh well.

    Devon

P.S. While I'm at it, I'll take the variable valve timing too, please.

AHhhh, aaaaa :Do No: sorry but I guess I have to tell ya they don't do that Variable pitch stuff no more. But a blank cheque with no credit limit and we'll see what we could do (not really, not in a 4L80E, but you do know the lock ups now work better than those beautiful old variable pitches). They are nostalgic, and they do work good, the first one I had done in our high school shop in 1978, for now if you want VP you need to use a TH300 or a TH400. As far as variable timing , maybe one day TA or someone can help you with that (ya think) .

I was wondering, do the 3 3/8 guages look right if you put them in the stock dash (they fit in the old guage plate holes right?). I want a 140 or 160mph speedometer anyway, so I wasn't thinking about using an electric to mechanical speedometer driver.

Hi Larry, Cable X might help you. Scroll about half way down the page, they also sell cross members for the A body and 4L80e set up. Pricing is good with these guys also. Chris http://www.transmissioncenter.net/speedometer_calibration_______va.htm
Here is there main page. www.transmissioncenter.net

#68. Install a mechanical tachograph or operate a mechanical speedometer on a vehicle equipped with an electronic speedometer signal (sensor). You can do it -- quickly and easily -- at a cost far below that of buying and installing drive gears in the transmission. You save on the cost of buying and installing electronic tachographs and speedometers.

Cable X lets you use popular, low cost mechanical tachographs such as Abbott, Argo, Sangamo, Servis Recorder and Veeder-Root, and mechanical speedometers such as Autometer, Clark Brothers, Datcon, Stewart Warner and Teleflex. It operates at accurate speeds -plus or minus 2%- on the most common OEM electronic speed signals, and is as easy to install as any electronic tachograph.

Great point, these guys (Performance Automotive Transmission Center) have lots of interesting goodies, I have called them many times when I don't have it or can't get it (eg 5pin planets are impossible to come by, but they have them).
    Thanks Larry:Dou:

It might be worth looking at ordering some of the stock stuff also, last year I looked at some prices ie:AC Delco sensor's for 4L80's and the pricing was quite a bit cheaper then King. Have you tried the compu-shift controllers yet? Chris

I don't need one because I am using the TCI brake, but I have seen a couple installed, The Rossler trans brake can be automatically shifted or you can plug in a bypass harness on the outside of the trans.

I was going to ask you if you have any of those fibreglass bumpers for sale again?

    Thanks, Larry

Full manual valve body? what will you do with the lock up? I sold the bumpers to Dave. I bought my replacement bumpers from a guy on here and they look like real crome, I can see if he is still doing them if you like. Chris

    This is from the instructions:
Locate a suitable ground location for the green, yellow, and black wires and cut to length. The rear speed sensor in the case is a good location. Strip approximately " insulation from these wires and install into the eyelet connector provided. Install bolt through eyelet connector and tighten the bolt where it was removed. The red wire connects to a trans brake button (+12V) and the blue wire connects to a +12V switch for the converter lock-up.

The lockup operates in 4rth gear, using a simple switch for overiding, and the lockup just a pushbutton.

If you could get ahould of the bumper guy Chris, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks again

Thats cool Larry, I was wondering about being able to over ride lock-up at the track because I don't think it would be to good to use under full power. Did they make the 5 pin planets in straight cut? I robbed I few 4L80E 4 pins from king for the 400's but haven't ventured into the 5's at all. This is a very cool project Larry I can't wait to see how it pans out. I hope to be gone back east by the end of October but if you need any help with the engine side of things please call. I have a break-in stand here so feel free to use it. Chris

I have a buddy that put a 4L80 in a 64 Special. He uses the speedo in the stand alone computer (Compushift). Tranny works real well, hasn't broken it yet and he tries real hard. Looks like a good way to go to me. They are heavy and bigger than a T400 by quite a bit. Dash speedo can be worked out. Peace, Mike D.

    Chris,

They have not made the 5 pins in straight cut from the factory, and as it turns out the straightcut are good for not applying thrust from the gear to the carrier, supposedly making more power and saving thrust washers. But the helical gears are actually stronger in high impact situations (such as a trans brake on a nitrous fed big block), and the 5 pins are 25% stronger than the 4 pin planets. They are starting to make 6 and 8 pin planets for lower gear ratios, I haven't heard anything about their reliability compared to a factory 5 pin (look out for aftermarket 5pins is the word, who's I don't know), but some are from TCI so I expect they are good quality.

I use the 4pin straight cut with no problems all the time in our 400's, they came in motorhomes afterall. You can use 400 planets in "certain year 4L80E's" due to oiling changes, and you need to watch the band combo too. You also need a reluctor wheel on the planet for a speedo signal if using a TCM.

How long are you going back east for?
    Larry

    Hi Mike,
You say he uses the speedo in the computer? You mean he is using an electric speedo hooked up to the computer signal wire, or maybe a electric/mechanical speedo driver adapter to drive the stock speedometer from the electric signal wire? All I'm after is if he's using an electric speedo, how does it look and fit, I can't remember if the 64's have a round speedmeter hole? I don't want to put an electric speedo in there if it doesn't look right. I might use the electric/mechanical adapter box if that's the case.
    Thanks, Larry.
