Got a hell of a good deal on a 4L80E. My question is are there going to be any major fittment issues regard the floor? I haven't heard of any major issues but thought it would be a good idea to ask.
HI there, I am using a 4L80E in my Skylark. I had it mounted in there but it is now out while I put the new engine etc in. The th 350 cross-member can be re-used if you cut the trans mount off the cross-member, weld it back onto the other side, and then slid the cross-member back to line up with the trans mount. I just bought the G force cross-member, it bolts up. There is no need to modify the tunnel at all. The trans lines are tight in the tunnel area so most people use a 90 degree adapter to provide clearance. Regarding the bellhousing pattern you will need a buick to chevy adapter plate, but that is cheap and easy. To control my trans I am using a custom computer and paddle shifters so I can control the shifting with my thumbs. PM me for more info about that and the spedo. All in all it is a really good trans however I feel it is only worth the hassle if you have 600 + HP... Under that the 2004R is a better option as it is easier to swap in.
Can't vouch for anything but my Riviera regarding 4L80e install. But Sean or I can easily provide you the information you seek. Search the forum for my posts I actually provide pictures and one of my post I have a word document describing the install. I developed a controller and use it my car. I built one for Sean too. I have a VDO speedo and the electrical connection aren't too unique. I thoroughly enjoy the 4L80e transmission. -Chad
Also keep in mind that you will need a new driveshaft as the th350 spline count is different than the 4L80E. There are a lot of little things that add to the hassle of this swap however the 4L80E is a VERY good trans! If you google "chevelle 4l80e" you will find info about people swaps.
Trailblazing can be a hassle, but then again who can say "I have the mighty 4L80e behind my 455 or TT350?" :beers2: 1.) Drive shaft shortened and yoke swap. (inexpensive) 2.) Transmission mounting (inexpensive) 3.) Cooling lines routed (inexpensive) 4.) Speedmeter electronic or mechanical (inexpensive to expensive). 5.) Adapter plate kit BOP to Chevy (inexpensive) 6.) Shifter linkage (inexpensive cable solution is likely best) 7.) TCM (inexpensive to expensive) all this for the assurance that the transmission is every bit as comparable to the proven reliable TH400.:bglasses:
Tci ez-tcu 500 caddy engine going to use a 750 street demon so it'll look really clean. Even the tps sensor demon has looks really good.
you dont need a buick to chevy adapter anymore Reid makes an actual SFI bellhousing extreme transmissions and I believe jakes performance both offer 4l80E with Reid Bop bellhousings You can put a manual valve body in it for manual shifting May change tail shaft to work with mechanical speedo, or leave it and run electric speedo. theirs quit a few cpu shifter boxes for the trans also. Optispark seems to be mosr popular if you plan to go EFI and 4l80E look into holley EFI Dominator..controls engine and trans last but not least you're also able to convert it to a 5spd or 6spd auto with a new valvebody too
Bruce I'm not sure how to answer. I will gladly share info on it and have with other 4l80e posts in v8 buick. It is just a matter of sequencing the solenoids. In the interest of not hijacking the thread send me a pm if you would like. I kept my solution very simple and not tied to any efi or other systems. Heck if you can program a micro controller than the hardest part is done. The sequence in 01, 00, 10, 11. (Gear 1,2,3,4) Then you can engage the TCC anytime you want.
It is a th400 bell with a lot of work... see: http://ls1tech.com/forums/automatic-transmission/1497933-4l80e-sfi-bellhousings-conversions.html
4l80e control You could send stuff to my email, bcroe@juno.com . I was thinking drawings of how the connector hooks up, flow diag of the functions, how the manifold vac and rpm are used to set line pressure & shift intensity, when to do converter lock/unlock, maybe partial schematic? thanks, Bruce Roe
Re: 4l80e control Hi Bruce, I won't speak for Chad but just to clarify what he built for himself and for my car this is the setup: There is no manifold, rpm, or lockup function with his kit and that works fine for me. The kit he built for me uses either a computer mouse to shift up or down, and it only shifts manually never automatic. I set mine up with paddle shifters on the steering wheel so I can row through the gears with my thumbs. For lockup I have a toggle switch on the dash that I will only activate when going highway speeds, and there is a brake switch in that circuit as a safety feature as without that the engine can stall if you hit the brakes when the lockup is engaged. Chad did me a favor and made me up the kit and I am really happy with it!
