This trans is in a Chev but its still a G.M My son has a 95 Z28 with LT1 and 4L60E trans. Problem is trans broke first time, sprag came out top of case. Many new parts then, 3 weeks later sprag broke then and broke other interals, several months later sprag again. These are not standard production parts they are the good stuff. I can't blame the trans shop I have used them in other hi-po units and no problems, they are knowledable about the hi-po world and care about what they are doing. Engine has medium mods and makes good horsepower so I know this trans will not hold up forever, but its starting to rattle again like a sprag. What about the 200R4 built up will it last any better? I've blown a lot of 4 speeds but they were cheaper and easier to build . Any suggestions other than get a driver with a lighter foot. Need help soon.

What was he doing when the first one broke? I have built a lot of these over the years and never had one brake.

One thing comes to mind is has anyone done any ECM modifications?

Whatever he is doing to do this I would like to know so I don't do it. :TU:

Thanks for the reply. When the first one broke, it was on the 1-2 shift at 6000. Yes the ECM has been reprogrammed. bigger injectors, MAS modded, cold air, long tube headers and big tube exhaust system. I think one of the main problems is his driving style hard all the time. Won't buy an everyday work car, uses this one all the time. I know the 700R4 and 4L60E are basicaly the same inside, and he certainley is not making the torque your 462 is, so maybe our builder is missing something minor causing major problems. I have trans problem now, Cadillac with Northstar motor, converter is slipping in lock-up, much money and I don't have the knowledge to fix that one. Any other suggestions on the 4L60E will be appreciated.
    Thanks,

I would soften the 1-2 shift. 2nd accumulator cannot be completely disabled on those. It probably has the massive 2nd gear apply piston and higher than normal line pressure, so I would back off on how fast 2nd applies because it shouldn't slip once applied, even with a slower apply. 2-4 band life might be shortened a little bit, but I would rather replace it once and awhile than what your are going through. Every trans that I have grenaded did so from trying to make it shift too fast.
Watch for excess 2-3 overlap also. This is very destructive when combined with a quick shift. Some amount of overlap is needed to prevent RPM flare up, but too much causes a serious momentary bind.

Thanks for the info. Car going to trans shop in the morning. I am going to take the info you gave and see what they can come up with. This is getting very expensive, aggrevating, and inconvient to me. Worse yet my Cadillac trans is acting up and shop tells me converter is bad and operating solenoids, even worse price tag of $3500 to fix. That gets deeeeep into my GSX money needed to finish frame off. Perfect timing and just my luck.

You're welcome. I've been forced to get familiar with the 4L60E here lately. Sorry I can't help with the Caddy trans.

go over to www.cadillacforums.com and they have a how to replace those solenoids. Its a messy and practically all day job but its very cheap compared to the stealership.
